Hello

Hello my name is John. I self-diagnosed a few months ago at age 46. I explored the possibility I might have Asperger's syndrome several years before then but all the descriptions I read seemed to ignore the emotional components involved so I disregarded them. Not that long ago I discovered intense world theory which makes a great deal more sense to me so I reevaluated.

I've been lurking a bit on the forums for about a month as I'm not entirely comfortable discussing my experiences with autism but I think there is value in asking others in the spectrum about their experiences and I may be able to provide useful input to others as well.

I enjoy going on solitary walks, playing computer games (Project Zomboid and Kenshi are my current favorites), and exploring the nature of consciousness. I practice Yoga daily but I do this to help control back pain so I don't really consider it a hobby anymore than taking an aspirin daily would be a hobby.

It's highly likely I may say something on the forum at some point which may offend someone. This is unintentional. Should this happen please accept my apologies beforehand and feel free to ask me to rephrase offending statements. I'd like to engage with the community not push it away. I may also take 2-3 days to reply to certain kinds of questions so I ask your patience should this occur. Thank you.

Isobella, 41, self diagnosed. New to the forum myself, but fear not. It's friendly, interesting and valuable. Firstly we made it to 40 with autism (fairly chronic aspergers for me) so might have had an experience that can help others, second there are helpful tips that I hadn't thought of such as what the shutdowns are like and third, I almost feel like I can drop the polite act that dominates my daily life and be utterly and completely logical here. Is quite a relief!

hi john m,welcome to AC!
in terms of yoga, how does it not trigger any backpain? how does it feel for you after a session?
i have severe nerve damage in my spine and ive been recommended yoga for years but i always think it would make it worse and i shy away from the idea.

There have been a few times when practicing yoga has triggered back pain for me. In these cases I had done things previously which had tightened my muscles more than normal and I hadn't modified my routine to account for this. In your case, my perception is that attending a class that caters to people who don't have nerve damage to their spines or similar issues would be counter-productive and lead to further pain or injury. If you're interested in trying yoga but unsure whether or not it will help then I recommend looking for a trainer who takes things slowly and who's good at modifying poses to accommodate for your condition. Be sure to discuss your concerns with potential trainers before hand. If your unsure whether or not they take you seriously then don't use them as an instructor.

After I do my routine in the morning (usually about 20-30 minutes) I experience less back pain and am able to stand up straight. I sit behind a computer screen at work for long periods and at home when I play computer games. I tend to get a little bit of a hunch back if I don't practice regularly.
