Hello

My name is Charlie, and I was born in Northern California on March 14, 1989. I've been living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania since July 2005. I was formally diagnosed with AS in about November 1998, at the age of 9.

Some people who know a lot about autism spectrum disorders can tell that I'm on the spectrum, but the vast majority are shocked when I tell them I have it. They are surprised that someone with "autism" has a driver's license and a college degree. People are surprised because many of them lump all people with autism into one perceived stereotype, and are shocked that someone who is on the spectrum can do all the stuff that I've done. I have a driver's license, a college degree, a good job, and a ton of friends. When I hang out with my guy friends (some AS, some not), we do the same things a bunch of bros without AS would do. We've get drunk, talk about cars and women, and happily engage in locker room talk about sex and bodily functions when there are no adults or women present. Some AS people I know are very socially awkward when it comes to romantic relationships and life in general.

As you could probably tell by my username, I drive a Toyota Tacoma. I was actually informed of this site by another user on TacomaWorld.com who saw my Aspergers blog/BS thread on that site. My truck is a 2010 that my dad bought for me brand new when I got my learner's permit. 10+ years and 106K+ miles later, I wouldn't trade my truck for the world!

Anyway, I have wheels and a license. I also graduated from Bucks County Community College with an associate's degree in journalism. I actually plan on becoming an HVAC technician, but even now, I am still not 100% what I want to do for a career.

My dad is a Navy veteran and the vice president of a defense contractor that builds drones. I currently work at his company taking care of the fleet vehicles and running errands, etc. I love this job because it pays $16 per hour, and it has a 401K plan and paid vacations.

Interests of mine include photography, writing (obviously), Chevy and GMC trucks, Rolls-Royce motorcars, dogs, women, building LEGO models, binge-watching shows like King of the Hill and South Park on Hulu, and so much more!

I have had numerous jobs since 2006, some of which were "sublet" out to me by the special ed system in my school (more on that later). The longest time I ever had one job was when I worked as a barback at a bar/music venue for more than 4 years (from December 2014 to January 2019. For those of you who do not know (my parents didn't even know when I got the job), a barback is basically a bartender's assistant. We keep the drinks stocked, keep the ice bins full, run food, bus tables, clean bathrooms, pick up liquor, change light bulbs, decorate for holidays, assist the bouncers with spotting problem customers, etc; Barbacks are the unsung heroes of the bar business! I am still technically employed there, but I am effectively furloughed because the bar closed indefinitely for renovations back in January 2019 and nothing has been done. I am still very close with the general manager and see her on a regular basis.

I detailed cars at a large local dealership, and I had that job for about 10 months (September 2018-June 2019). I had this job simultaneously while I worked as a barback, and for about five months after the barbacking gig. I did not like this job for reasons to numerous to count, and I will gladly tell anybody who asks why I disliked it so much.

Prior to the barbacking job, I did not really have much of a real job. From 2006 to 2009, I had three jobs that were more or less "sublet" to me by the special education department of my school district. I was paid minimum wage by the Bucks County Intermediate Unit, and in exchange I was treated like a diagnosis instead of a person. I worked as a sales associate/stocker at CVS Pharmacy from 2006 to 2008; I worked at the public library as a stocker simultaneously while working at CVS, also from about 2006 to 2008; I worked in maintenance/custodial at a retirement community for a few months in 2009.

I devoted all of my time to college from September 2009 to October 2013, when my savings were running dry and I decided I really needed to get a job to make some money. I got a crappy part-time job at Dunkin Donuts that lasted all of three weeks. I then got a job at a family-run deli in November 2013, and last a few hours there before realizing the owner was a jerk.

I swore I'd never work in the food/service industry again, but then my friend who managed my favorite hangout offered me a job as her personal assistant in November or December 2014. That turned into barbacking, and the rest is history!
