Hi, I'm Jess. I'm undiagnosed, but in talks with my therapist about scheduling an evaluation. I'm trying to find others who relate with how I think. I'm not great at introducing myself without specific questions, so I guess that's all for now. :persevere:

Hi and welcome, I hope that you enjoy it here. What are your interests? Are you at work and/or in education? How would you describe how you think? People here will likely be able to relate to you.

Welcome Jess
I am glad you are trying for a diagnosis.
I’m trying to think of some specific questions but I can’t. My autism consists of meltdowns special interests anxiety talentedArtistic inability to find words difficulty with verbal communication. I hope these things help you but feel free to ask questions if you want.

Welcome Penumbra! :D

Since you haven't had your evaluation and testing yet,...just a suggestion,...perhaps you've already done this,...but I found it helpful to sit down and make an itemized list of all the things that you feel are "different" about yourself. It may have been overkill, but I had a list of over 150 thoughts, experiences, sensory issues, etc. I printed it out and handed it to the psychologist. It was sort of a "You might be autistic if..." list. The reason I suggest this is two-fold,...in an interview, the psychologist will be asking most of the questions,...and perhaps not the right ones as it pertains to you. The other reason,...and the females here can attest to,...the criteria for diagnosis still has a male bias and the risk being that you may be diagnosed with some other "personality disorder".

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I mostly play and organize tabletop games like D&D. I've been unemployed for years now because no one will hire me anymore, but I used to be in the military for a brief time. It was a poor fit. I've gone to college for mechanical engineering, and later graphic design, but I lost focus in both and dropped out. I'm still working on trying to find the right terms to describe how I think. I don't feel like I fit in with people in general though. I never have. I've been criticized a lot for not understanding things quickly enough, I've been called lazy, and I've been accused of not caring about responsibilities. I have my own internal reasons for displaying that way, but I still don't know how to talk about it all yet. I also basically don't function in social situations with people I don't know well. I'm usually trying to analyze how to talk to them, but I don't know what to say until later. My mind cycles on itself trying to find the right words that will make the conversation sound normal. I also deal with PTSD, so I don't know what crossover there is.

Welcome Jess

It may or may not be the same, but 'meltdown' seems like the right term for what I deal with sometimes. My parents called the police on me once to scare me out of repeating it. I'm over 30 now and it still happens when I'm highly stressed or unable to handle a situation, like yesterday.

Thank you for this. I shared a few links to articles with my therapist that felt right, but I should make a more detailed list like you suggested too. I'm not sure if that gender bias will hit me the same way. I'm transgender and I've heard about the strong correlation there. My psychiatrist even mentioned it.

The welcome sign's out and we're always open.

My question in thinking about autism would be to think back to those earliest times of life.
Did you seek being with other children or did you prefer playing alone?
That was one of my earliest signs. Even under age five, I liked doing things alone even though there
were other children next door.

Absolutely alone. My parents did everything in their power to make me play with other kids, but it was my least favorite way to spend my time. Video games and books were my usual solitary escapes . I eventually found a few friends I liked, since I also didn't like being home with my abusive parents, but I still felt like they demanded my attention too frequently. I made excuses to avoid hanging out with them.

Hi @Penumbra. Welcome out of the shadows into the light found here in the Forums.
Hang around a while and join in?

THere is a rumour that there are donuts somewhere near coffee in here - but I have yet to find them myself.
Haha, thanks. Donuts and coffee upset my stomach, but I brought my own snacks out of the shadows to share. I forgot to mention, I love cooking.
