Hello!

hi...

I just got diagnosed with 'ASD' (psychologist calls it Aspergers, but said it's officially ASD now.. wassup with that?).

I'd never heard of it before. I was always told I was just anxious by doctors and treated for GAD (general anxiety disorder). It sure sounds like me though. The doctor gave me a book to read, and, it pretty much described most of my traits.

I'm 28 now, so, little late.

So..I'm here to find out: Now what?!!? :-/ :) ..forums seem to be my goto for life information heh.

Welcome to AC!

Oh yeah, we've got some lively discussions over how the DSM5 has changed Asperger's Syndrome to ASD. You can read about it in some threads in the "Autism Spectrum News, Events and Research" section.

Ah, thanks! Yeah, there is still a wikipedia article for aspergers, websites seem to still refer to it as aspergers, etc.

Not so late, I was diagnosed at age 63.

Wow, so, does it really make a difference to have the diagnosis? I've been trying to change forever..

That's a good question...discussed a bit here as well. I'm in my late 50s and recently self-diagnosed. Very much on the fence about ever getting a formal diagnosis.

I am thrilled to finally understand what was going on for my entire life. I was on a quest to understand my communication problems for forty years and found the answer at last. It all makes sense in retrospect.

Thanks everyone.

Think I'll be able to now learn some of the 'skills' I might be missing?

There is some comfort in knowing I'm not completely alone. I thought I was an alien... haha.

28 is not late by any means. Only a select few of us were diagnosed when we were young. ASD and aspergers are the same, use either on this site!

Hello and Welcome!!

Diagnosed at twenty over here, and even that felt "late." But it's a matter of perspective. The truth is that it's never too late to learn something about oneself. :)

Regarding the Asperger's vs. ASD issue: it's not that Asperger's was renamed---it was considered somewhat separate from the rest of the autism spectrum prior to the release of the DSM V. I won't go into details and opinions about it here, as we have plenty of discussion going on about that elsewhere, but the gist of it is that the old distinction is no longer made.

Thanks everyone.

Hello,

I also always thought I was an alien. It's better late than never. I am still not officially diagnosed at 25 but just started talking to those health care professionals a year ago.
