Hi! My name is Stormy, and I'm a 23 year-old Asperger's patient. I'm a soon to be Fine Arts major at UAA. I was officially diagnosed at 21, which was both a blessing and a blow. I finally knew why I was different, but I also had to sit across from my diagnosing doctor and listen to how I would always have to live with my parents or have living assistance. I was crushed at first, watching my dreams of a husband and children slipping away. Fortunately, I have parents who told me that I could either accept his version of my life, or live my own. From that moment on, I have fought what others said I couldn't do, and I am now living with hope for the future and am all the more determined to stop living a mediocre life and make it a great one. I am glad to have found a community where I am safe to be myself and to be able to talk to those who are like me, and face the same/similar challenges. Looking forward to many discussions here! :D

Don't worry---that doctor was full of manure! You have the ability to empower yourself and learn how to live on your own. I'm still living with my parents, but not because I want to. Once I get a paying job, I'm going to start saving money so I can move and be closer to my boyfriend. In the meantime, I'm working on my social skills.

Welcome to AspiesCentral, Stormy (I love your name!). :)

Welcome Aspie angel, you have a typical aspie attitude, never say what they can do because they will do it and successfully to.

Hi Aspie Angel and welcome,
Good for you sister. What amazing parents you have. When they paint a picture, of the sky being the limit, thats when magic happens. So good to see such a positive spirit on the forum.
Cheers

Thanks, Ereth! Funny enough, I was born during a lightning storm. I currently live in Alaska with my parents, but I sort of miss Texas. For one thing, you can feel your extremities most of the year down there; up here, not so much. Last year, we got so much snow, we had like a six/seven foot tall hill of snow in our front lawn, said hill was around ten to twelve feet long. When you live up here long enough, you know that the colder the winter, usually the hotter the summer. Anchorage got up to 80+ degrees last summer. That's weird for up here.

Any way, yeah. I cried in the waiting room for 10 minutes or so. Then, my parents gently smacked some sense into me. After that, I really don't like being told what I can and can't do. It awakens that stubborn streak in me. I'm starting to design a tattoo for myself of a rose vine wrapped around a crescent moon. Roses are my birth flower, and the vines and moon are symbols of strength, change, and renewal. I'm really falling in love with this idea.

I really hope that you can realize your own dreams really soon. Social skills have got to be one of the hardest things for us Aspies, but I believe you can do it. One quote that has been really inspiring to me these last few weeks is from one of my new favorite series. "I am Dauntless. I am brave." - Tris, Divergent. I hope that it will inspire you and others, too. Good luck finding your new job and thanks for the welcome!!!
