Hi all computer land peoples. I have a Dell M1730 that upon turning on a few days ago the screen was black. The light on the numlock was on, the lights on the speakers and the functions like Wifi light, and bluetooth and stuff were all on. However nothing else. I could hear the wir of the computer start, and yet nothing on the screen at all. I need helps Remember any suggestions have to be doable by someone who is visually impaired or can be told to someone who can help me fix it. I would love suggestions. This is what I have tried:

1) Turn off computer and turn back on (nothing)
2) Pull the plug re-plug in and try booting again (nothing)
3) Took out the battery and reinserted battery (again Nothing changed)
4) tried to get it into repair mode but the screen was black so I have no idea if that even got anywhere.

It definitely sounds like the monitor has definitely gone on this laptop and is in need in being replaced or a connection inside that connects the laptop monitor in has gone loose?

The other option is just simply put it to repairs which is going to charge you, depending on how much they charge you for or take the risk by D.I.Y.

I wanted to test the monitor but my old old desktop that is what my mom uses is too old it won't connect to the laptop. I read on the forum for Dells of this type it could be three things:
1) the monitor is crapped out
2) Nivida graphics card is dead
3)combination of both
Repairs that are that costly is not an option

Your laptop has a DVI connector right? Ask someone to get a cable and hook it up to a flat screen monitor. You said that the desktop your mother uses is too old (is it a VGA monitor?), yet from my searches on "Dell M1730" it looks like you have a DVI connector. If that's so, most flat screens accept DVI input and I'd go about troubleshooting from there.

If that fails to work, I'm willing to suspect issues with the graphics unit.

This; alternatively, if you have an old screen (non-flat) you might have the regular VGA connector (15 pins?).

Best option is to look for a converter/adapter to make it fit. I know DVI (male) to VGA (female) as well as VGA (male) to DVI (female) exist. Think it's a minor expense to at least see what's wrong before thinking big repairs.

I cannot drive so sparing the expense of going to get it is not possible. I am going to have my friends husband look at it as he has computer monitors that are newer and he can see where I cannot. Is there any other way to determine if it is the monitor or if it is the graphics card?

As far as I know... you do need some kind of monitor/screen to check it. Having no way to display what your computer is communicating with you (through the screen) is one of the most annoying things ever.

So perhaps asking your friends husband is your best bet (and cheapest, heh) to see what's wrong.

When your laptop is fully booted, do you hear a Windows startup sound? If so, the monitor MIGHT be the culprit...though you still can't rule out the graphics card as that would need to be troubleshooted also. You may also want to do a routine dusting...I know it sounds irrelevant to your problem, but dust buildup is a hardware killer. If air can't circulate in and out of the laptop's cooling vents, the higher system temperatures can cause all sorts of nasty stuff.

Your laptop has dual GPU's, correct? You're more likely to run into overheating issues with dual GPUs over running just one unit, and I'm almost willing to bet there are users out there who have issues similar to yours, with or without blank monitor. I run a custom built desktop for this very reason - the majority of laptops have barely sufficient cooling, enough to keep the system from damaging itself yet not enough to avoid it altogether. I was also going to mention that your warranty is likely kaput by now, so there's no use in trying to send it back if so. I'd suggest getting someone to look at it for you by using a DVI monitor first before you make any further decisions.

I did hear the sound until I tried to make it go into factory repair mode. now I don't hear anything. Cause I think it is factory mode now. Ugh. I am hoping that someone can look at it before I make any decisions about what I might do.

Sooo my friends husband said that he is making small progress with my computer but he is now encountering a error of 4-1-1 or something. And he had to replace something called the CMOS Battery. not sure what that means but ti seems that it is still not functioning correctly anyone have any thoughts?

I would say that its probably the graphics card that has overheated.

It could be the ram that needs a wipe to get rid of the dust.

"Making small progress" in that he can now see something (anything) on the screen as a result of replacing the CMOS battery?

Need more information about the error code.

Did he mean a Dell beep code 1-4-1-1 ? (RAM failure)

Or is the BIOS/or OS now citing a "411" error on the screen? (Possible OS files corrupted)
