Hi everybody, I've finally got internet service

entering peak crazy world

I have been living in my tiny home up in Jefferson since September 2022. I have been stuck using my phone to access the internet since then. All I can really do with the VERY unreliable cell signal is to keep updated on the news and get important phone calls and texts. I wasn't able to afford regular internet service until now, and also I had to wait for the rains to stop so I could put a pole in the ground for the dish antenna. I had a tech come out 6 months ago but he said that their insurance company won't let them install a dish on anything that has wheels, even if it is stationary. So I had to wait for winter to end to put a pole in the ground meeting their specs. My internet provider is a small local business called Root Automation, their website is 4fast.net. They fill the gap between wired broadband which is only available in the cities of Yreka and Mount Shasta, and expensive corporate satellite companies like HughesNet and Starlink. The dish actually connects to a signal broadcast from an antenna high on a hill near Yreka, instead of a space satellite. So I'm finally back.

Hi oregano, glad to see you back!

A few things changed, and we have a lot of new members. Rodafina got promoted to moderator.

Are you having fun in the cabin? What's it like?

It is actually very nice here. I can sleep with my door unlocked without fear. I drive a 2016 Hyundai Accent, infamous for the "Kia Boyz" theft hack where the driver's side back window is shattered, the steering column ripped up, and the car started with a screwdriver. I can be certain my car will still be there in the morning. I think I drive the only 10s-era Hyundai Accent 5 door in all of Siskiyou County.

My land is part of an open range, so cows and horses wander by while grazing. No screaming arguments or loud music. My schizophrenia is a lot better too-I really think electromagnetic fields from power lines and such plays into the disorder, but I am totally off grid. I get power from 1400w of solar panels, get water from either the dispensing machine in Yreka (potable) or directly from the Klamath River (nonpotable). I have a bucket filled with horse bedding (pine shavings) as a toilet. And nobody thinks that such a life is crazy up here like people do in Sacramento.

That sounds like a fascinating living arrangement to me. Looking forward to hearing more about your life in a tiny home, in a peaceful wilderness.

Wow. I remember when this was just an idea that you posted. Now another success story here at the forum. Do you stay in touch with your mom alot? Great to see you back at the forum. I am still trying to move closer to the beach. I have a 9 month wait. Jan or Feb maybe. But l just got my carport roof back so that is nice. There are still a lot of damaged carport roofs in my community.

I've spent some time in your area. If you draw a circle around your place with a 25 mile radius, what percentage has burned? Does in make a good firebreak now?

The only fire close to where I live was the Klamathon Fire in 2018. That came within about a mile or two of where I live. Most of the fires here happened in the forested areas of western Siskiyou County, which is quite a ways from where I live.
