Hi Folx - introduction here

My name is Emma Goldman-Sherman, and I'm a NYC playwright. I was diagnosed as autistic in 2021, at almost 56, and then I wrote a play about late diagnosis. WINNERS is a 2024 O'Neill semi finalist and will be presented at the Tank for PrideFest. I hope you'll come and see it!

WINNERS is a quirky, queer comedy about a clueless, competitive family. They struggle with communication challenges and obsess over tennis, golf, sharks, eels, and more! With 2 funerals, 2 coming outs, all-you-can-eat and a heavy trophy, WINNERS discovers the joy of late diagnosis autism. WINNERS celebrates the possibilities of queer, nb/trans and autistic authenticity!

We have an all-neurodivergent cast! And the director is autistic too!

Tuesday June 25th at 7pm (with an all-you-can-eat after-party!) More info available. PM/Inbox me for particulars.

Written by Emma Goldman-Sherman (me)
Directed by Kate Trammell
with Shoshanna Gleich, Sydney Kurland, Sarah Kaufman, and Mark Quiles
Winners received early development from New Circle Theatre Company.
I hope you will join me!
Best,
Emma

Thank you for the lovely invite, an entertaining night celebrating the showing of your play. Maybe you can record a short clip for those of us, not in New York. Wishing all the best for you on opening night.

I'm sorry to all those not in NYC - the union won't let us record. (I'll be blessed if the union lets us just do what we're trying to do.) I wish I could! Ask your local theatre(s) if they will program plays about autistic people - I'm not the only autistic playwright. But of course, you are welcome to ask them to do Winners, and I'd love that. Thank you for your support!

Very sad! You could probably make more money off a recording. NYC is big but 99% of the country will still not have an opportunity to see it.

I almost did a one man play for the Hollywood Fringe. But then COVID hit, the theaters were all shut down. It would have been fun. Too many issues for me the these days to consider it again.

Welcome to the forum, @Emma Goldman-Sherman. I hope you enjoy it here and stick around to see what we're all about and maybe participate in some threads.

Hope your play goes well. Are you feeling confident?

I understand. I had two shows opening at the end of March and in April of 2020 - both had to be cancelled. It was very disheartening. And now things are harder, real estate prices, and getting people to come out... Congratulations on getting as far with it as you did! It's hard to do.

Hi & welcome. Not really a play person myself. Only have seen two. One was 1776, but that was a school trip and the other was a German production of West Side Story. 'Wenn du ein Jet bist...' ;)

The sharks and eels are mildly tempting. Did you know they discovered something prehistoric they call an Eel Shark?

Got my start 50 years ago doing Gilbert and Sullivan in community theater. And as a college frosh doing Hair.

My short-term memory is fried. That's a very recent development. I can spend hours trying to memorize a few lines in a script, let alone an hour of nonstop acting. Yet I can remember things from when I was a kid like they just happened.
