Hi from Scotland, in pursuit of a diagnosis.

Hello folks, I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to write here for a first attempt, I can waffle but here goes, it's a gentle start.

I'm Tui, I'm 55, not having a great year, having a bad one would be more accurate and after many months of difficulties that have led me to the local mental health teams I have recently been told that it's not possible for me to pursue an Aspergers/ADHD diagnosis due to my age.
Apparently they are so sorry to have to say this but it now seems to be a strict policy, I'm in Scotland, not sure as yet if it's the same elsewhere.
Has anyone else come across this recently when trying to find some kindness within finding some kind of diagnosis ?

Thank you for your time, in advance.
All the best.
Tui.

Glad yo have you with us, @Tui

Unfortunately, this is actually a pretty common occurrence, even here in the USA. More so with difficulties finding someone who will diagnose a adult. But you are not alone in this. There are plenty my age (34) and older who have either never been diagnosed or got diagnosed late.

There are plenty of resources and posts that can help you get a better understanding of things you can do for yourself. We are happy to help with any questions you have as well~

Thank you for the kind reply Xinyta, this forum looks really good, I'll spend a good while researching and will interact with people more as I get familiar with how things go :)
Thanks for the offer of and being open to any of my questions, that's really appreciated.
Hope you are well yourself , thank you.
Tui

Hello and welcome, Tui. Pleasure to meet you, I'm also in Scotland!

It pains me to hear this. I just went to my GP for an official diagnosis last month. I'm still on the waiting list, but my GP took me very seriously and treated me with extreme kindness. I filled out 2 assessment forms, and she had no hesitation in referring me for a diagnosis (I'm 35.)

There was also someone else on here a while back who was around your age in Glasgow and he got a diagnosis.

That just doesn't seem right, fobbing you off due to age. I hope you can keep trying and get somewhere with your struggles. You are more than welcome to talk to me any time, I'm documenting my journey in as much detail as possible to help others. You will also find no shortage of kindness on here.

All the best to you.

Hi pal, thanks for your words :)
I was just on your profile and read your mention of the GP referral, tried to 'heart friendly' it but I'm not sure I'm allowed to yet as a new member as clicking the heart didn't work for me.
That's really great news for you pal, I'm very pleased to hear that, it's really important to be taken seriously and to feel listened to.
Thanks for stopping by with encouragement, I'm not giving up, 55 years of navigating/managing/coping and it takes a whole lot to reach out in the first place, now I've started so I'll finish :)
Thanks pal, all the best, Tui

Yo! We got a Scotsman! Finally we may overthrow the Tyranny of Edward the LongShanks!

Little joke.
Hope you don’t mind.;)

Hi and welcome.

I have recently been told that it's not possible for me to pursue an Aspergers/ADHD diagnosis due to my age.
That sounds backwards to me, here I got extra help and support because I'm over 55. I pushed the envelope and applied for a diagnosis when I was 54 but I was 55 by the time my name came up on the waiting list. (australia)

I'm all for overthrowing any kind of tyranny Wolfnox !
I'm not Scottish tho, just live there but I'll join in and help :D

Hello and welcome. I hope we can be supportive to you. I’m surprised to hear that about age restricted diagnostic processes. Maybe understanding yourself better can be enough for now.
