Hi everyone!

My name is Jessica and I like old movies, old music, cats and yummy recipes. If I am an Aspie then those are my special interests. I do not know what I currently am but I am on a mission to find out. I'm going to be 40 on January 18th or thirty-ten. I was born in the Sacramento area. As a small child I was diagnosed with Autism. I don't remember much but I know that I used to sit in a strange position and rock my head from side to side and I was afraid that the water would suck me down the drain in the bathtub. My autism was so bad I had to be separated from my mother, move to San Diego, live with Dad and go to a special school. Through behavior modification I got better and I was bright enough to get out of that special school and on to special education classes in regular elementary schools, at 6th grade I was mainstreamed, at 7th grade on I was in normal classes and cruelly teased by my classmates but made it through high school and graduation. I've outgrown my childhood autistic behaviors and from my teen years up to current I have been believing for years that my autism is a thing of the past and I am now 100% normal. My Mom has been trying to tell me otherwise for years. She believes that I've been in denial and the truth is that although I am very high functioning I still have autistic tendencies and she believes that now I probably have Asperger's syndrome. But I have not been reevaluated since childhood. So now this is my quest, to find out, am I an Aspie or have I truly left my autism down in history? I am going to start seeing a psychologist and in the meantime I am here to learn all I can about high functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome. Finally at almost 40 I am ready to do some serious self-exploration and I'm actually excited about it because now at this stage of my life if I do still have autism I am no longer ashamed of it or trying to push it away as I have done in the past.

Welcome to Aspies Central Jessica.

You will get the opportunity to learn more about your illness (I am just being non judgmental). You will be able to decide which to have
with the help of follow members. I was only diagnosed this year at 48.

What sort of old music do you like? I like a lot of the 1960s music. what I am listening to is covers of Rocky Burnette, Gene Vincent,
Elvis Presley by Imelda May. It might be an different idea as to old music. But I prefer a band that can play their music without auto tune.

You are I think in a good head space, to be able to work through any issues. It has taken me about 3 months to understand it.
It had been previously undiagnosed.

Do you need the text in bold or not? for some members it helps to be in bold.

Hi. I like mostly music from the 50s, 60s and 80s. Lately I've been listening to the song Incense and Peppermints from Strawberry Alarm Clock. It's taking me forever to understand my condition. I can have the text either way. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, Jessica. I'm rather new myself and I've truly enjoyed the last couple of days as a member. I hope you also find support, information, other members' stories' to relate to, etc. I personally was diagnosed recently at 28 after years of a variety of (now mostly discarded) diagnoses. I agree with Warwick. You are in a great head space and good on you for leaving the shame behind!

Warwick. I also prefer a band/artist that does not require auto tune to make them remotely bearable.

While I've never heard of autism being something someone can outgrow, I'm no expert. If someone wants to cite scientific studies that say otherwise, I welcome the opportunity to revisit my current understanding of the autism spectrum. But I think it's more likely that those old behaviors simply don't manifest anymore. Going to that special school probably helped you learn how to resolve those issues.

Don't worry, though! There's absolutely nothing abnormal about you. What you've defined is your personal "normal."

I hope I didn't misunderstand (and apologies if I did), but it sounds like your mother believes your "old" autism evolved into Asperger's. As far as I know, it doesn't work that way. You just left those childhood tics behind.

Welcome, and best wishes. :)

Jessica- It may take you time to work it all out, but you will and be able to as to how it effects you.

In July I was went to a psychiatrist who pick up on the initial symptoms, then I saw an aspergers specialist
a month later. About three weeks ago it all dropped into place for me.

I am not sure at what stage you are, but hope that may give you an idea as a possible time line for you.
