hi.

hi.
I wanted to say stuff but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to really "introduce myself" exactly.
So- I'm into a lot of sciencey stuff and artsy stuff. They intersect at the fact that I was hoping to study how art therapy changes the brain [which is actually a "thing" at this point]. because of various health issues, probably not going to happen but with any luck I'll be able to finish up my degree eventually. BLAH.

I seem to get along "in real life" a lot better than I actually do, which is because I tend to keep my roaming to areas where I'm more acceptable. Eventually you learn a bunch of tricks, and if you have an interest that is basically learning how people work, that helps. My huge passion is psychology. More generally, anything that could possibly have anything to do with the brain. I also like a lot of bio stuff.
I usually do a lot of art and I love things that talk about how that works with brain stuff. So like, the fact that a lot of artists with temporal lobe epilepsy prefer to use tertiary colors more often.
Blahblahblah.

I'm always saying the wrong thing but go ahead and call me on it and I will try to make amends and clear it up. I'm in boston. I ramble. Tell me if I'm chatting too fast in chat- I am extremely self concious about it but don't realize when i do it. I get really excited sometimes.

ok, well that was a little better than i thought.

One of my special interests is discovering how people work, and I quite like biology as well. I think we'll get along just fine ^^

Welcome to aspiescentral, I'm sure you'll find many more people who share your interests :D

Alright, let's keep the trend of bringing regulars who post good content on WP over here going. ;)

Bring a few more with you, would you? This place is like WP without the trolls. You'll like it ten fold better here.

I thought you introduced yourself wonderfully. This idea of art and it's impact on the brain is intresting. Psychology is so vast and intresting but thing change! Like asperger's! The DSM IV changed it! I guess they kind rolled it into a blanket diagnosis. I don't get it

Thank you! I was trying to figure out what to say and then it was a few days after I'd been hanging out so I figure just start writing and see what happens. :]

The idea is according to the APA at this point, Asperger's is a manifestation of classical autism, it's just a difference of severity in a lot of ways. They also subsumed PDDNOS- it's just a difference in severity in a lot of ways.

The problem with this? It completely contradicts so much research. Research not just based on behavioral observations which could possibly be subject to bias but based on things like brain volume and development, cognitive profiles.

So, yeah haha. A lot of people don't get it because it totally doesn't make sense ;)

I was wondering if you ever tried listening to ASMR music? (Autonomous sensory meridian response) It is really cool, as I was being diagnosed this was brought up. Also, I also tend to be overly chatty and I train people at my job and sometime I can go on and on instead of getting to the point. What it did was get one of those sweet fancy smart watches and set a timer for 25 min or so and set it to vibrate. When the timer goes off it alerts me and it kind of reminds me to be aware of what I am doing. Hmm. It went off right now infact.

Welcome aboard :)

No Laz it makes total sense I'm auti/aspie but I'm positive my auti brain cloud which makes me miss social signals when stressed, is totally separate from my aspie blank face not recognizing facial and empathic sentiments which ruins my life 24/7. I think the problem is they like to measure things by visible symptoms, but sometimes differences in 2 different brain sectors can mirror the same symptoms, more cat scans are needed to be matched to symptoms to build a accurate picture of what belongs to what.

Hey Rocco that is a nice one, he never passes on a chance to show off his lovely paintings.

It's 4 1/2 years later so I want to introduce myself again. I guess?

Im still into both science and art, both of which borrow a lot from each other. My brain works well with stuff that uses things I learned from both arenas- stuff like sewing makes my brain really really happy.

I was able to be trained and certified as a peer support specialist and do that in several different places. I use a lot of the skills I learned in the training to not only fulfill that role but to do stuff like advocate and give presentations on important issues. The training- and really any good training for peer support- includes a LOT of self-care, stress management and communication skills.

I do a lot of advocacy for a lot of issues. I moved across the country and got married and it was really scary but totally made sense. I am part of working groups on homelessness issues, I help a local urban garden and non secular church figure out how to make their space more welcoming and accessible to EVERYONE, and I am trying really hard to get the suicide prevention and awareness community to understand autistics as vulnerable to depression and crisis and needing support.

I work super hard at being just normal enough for those around me (with the exception of my husband and puppy) and it's exhausting. I stopped writing as much and I have yet to find a crowd of autistics to share space with since I moved. I realized that's always a support and network I need.

Also ugh masking. tired rawr

I hope this makes sense and is helpful rather than... I don't know, too much? Obnoxious? Unnecessary?
mJust stuff is a little different I thought it was relevant. Anyway thanks. Hi.
