Hi

Hi... not good at introductions... I chose StormtrooperDeadeye as my name because I am a major star wars fan and the concept of a Stormtrooper Deadeye is something I find humorous.

I am a male in my early 20's. I was diagnosed with high functioning autism by an LCSW that has known me for going on almost half a decade.

I joined this forum so that I can talk (try to at least, I suck at talking) to fellow people with ASD. Also so I can hopefully learn tips and tricks for dealing with symptoms.

I was non verbal when I was a kid, spent years at a speech school learning how to speak. When I transferred to a mainstream school, it was a horrible time because I couldn't interpret social cues and stuff. I'd also frequently have melt downs in class, and run out of the class I was in. Finally in highschool, I decided to hide my monotone voice, and act dumb to try and relate to people. When my LCSW diagnosed me, I decided to stop hiding my monotone voice and stop acting fake.... So yeah... I am embracing ASD.

Quick question: My LCSW said that the term Asperger's is no longer valid, but instead its called "High Functioning Autism", and that if the term was still valid, I'd be considered as having Asperger's. So, is it fine for me to call myself an Aspie? Or do I have to say the long winded term "High Functioning Autism".

Welcome to the Forums! I hope you make new friends and enjoy your stay in the process! :)

Yes, you're more than welcome to call yourself an Aspie. Many people here still call themselves an Aspie despite the change, and many places still use the diagnosis as well (such as the UK if I'm not mistaken).

and They're technically correct. It was moved into HFA, or Level 1 Autism. Many disagree with the changes from DSM-IV to DSM-V regarding Autism, but not much that can be done about it.

Hey there and warm welkome to the forums

Over here (Sweden ) its all lumped together as ASD

Hi StormtrooperDeadeye

welcome to af.png

It's also easier to use the term aspie when around others because they are probably totally unfamiliar with 'high functioning autism'. But when aspergers was separate from high functioning autism, there were only a couple differences and one of them was HFA was late talkers. (I didn't know how to talk until I was in second grade and having speech therapy. Probably suggested by the school.)
Hello and welcome.

Aspie is still used a lot. It comes from 'Aspergers' of course. Aspergers was dropped in the US as diagnosis a few years back but still used in many other countries.

Some other terms (that I can think of at the moment) you see people refer to themselves as are: autistic, on the spectrum, neurodiverse, ASD, HFA (short for 'High Functioning Autism').

I use practically all of them at different times. :D

Welcome to Autism Forums! While it is true that the term "Asperger's Syndrome" is no longer used in a official diagnosis, the term "Aspie" is just fine. I was diagnosed with the old DSM-4 and I consider myself a "Aspie".
