Hi!

Hi,

I'm Kira. I was diagnosed today as meeting the criteria for ASD. I had suspected as much in the recent months but never much before that (I'm 32). I'm not sure whether or not to tell my family because I suspect my sister (who is undiagnosed but quite clearly ASD - especially compared to me) and my mother will both try to convince me it's not the case and that I'm being dramatic. I guess I'm still wondering whether I've made it all up in my head & projected these traits to get a diagnosis. I'm not sure if anyone else feels the same.

Anyway, what an introduction!

Hi and welcome. Plenty of us don't get a diagnosis, but form our own opinion, sounds like you have done both. Read more about it and join in discussion here, if it's useful and helps you find strategies that work for you, thats what's important.

Telling others isn't usually the most helpful part of understanding who you are, and in terms of autism people don't usually know enough about what it is anyway. Friends and family can often try to either tell you it's incorrect or try to support you by telling you to be totally open about it. That's not helpful either, though well meaning, as the lack of understanding of autism means you may meet with discrimination and negativity if you share this status.

Take care who you tell, and don't inform people at work, would be my advice.
