Hi.

I'm a parent, of a very special and dear little girl, who is 7, going into 2nd grade, and she's teaching me everything I ever wanted to know about Asperger's. I'll be honest, some days I wonder if it's not me who she gets it from. As far as I know, I'm what I guess is called NT (this is all new jargon for me) and she is my only kiddo on the spectrum. Maybe her little brother, but I don't think so. For right now, I'm here to observe and learn, quietly, just hoping to find some links, some resources, anything to help us understand her better so that every night doesn't end up with me crying silently in bed because I'm afraid I failed her again. :(

I'm also raising 7 other kids ranging from 14-10months old, some step, some bio. I must be insane.

No, you're not insane---just big-hearted. (And incredibly patient!)

I wouldn't worry too much about whether your daughter "gets it from" you. While many studies have shown that there is evidence for a genetic connection to autism, that doesn't necessarily mean you're responsible. All of the science is still being sorted out.

You're definitely not failing your daughter in any way. The fact that you're here seeking help in better understanding her tells me the opposite.

Welcome!

Welcome to the AC forum :)

There is no such thing as starting too early in helping your child

I think you will find us friendly and helpful to learn what to expect ;)

Hello,
your daughter is a lucky girl to have a mom who cares enough to seek out help for her. You have not failed her until you have abandoned her. Quite the opposite. Believe in her and you will have given the best thing you possibly can.

Welcome :)

Your daughter sounds like a real professor. It's comforting to know she can understand, and accept, who she is, and how she thinks; and so early in life.

I recommend browsing our resources page, which lists books on AS as recommend by our members. I especially recommend looking in to any books/ advice written by Dr.Tony Attwood, who is simply brilliant: Resources | AspiesCentral.com

Although your daughter is still very young, I recommend looking in to this book too, as it will be a valuable guide as she becomes a woman; not just for yourself, but for her. It has many tips about typical traps that women on the spectrum may sometimes fall in to, so it could potentially save a lot of stress in the future. It also advises parents how to react to certain situations with your child: Aspergirls: Empowering Females With Asperger Syndrome | AspiesCentral.com

Feel free to browse through our parenting section too: Parenting & Autism Discussions | AspiesCentral.com

Welcome to AC :)
So many children, and trying every day to do the best for each one of them - I think you are AWESOME!
