How do I know?

How do I know if I have Asperger's? My manager says that I might, since tasks are easier for me if I can do them step by step. Also, if I know that X does this sound that Y does that. Or, how things interact. I'm new here, so can someone help me out? Thanks.

It's not a simple process. Traits and behaviors of Autism Spectrum Disorder don't pan out using any "cookie-cutter" methodologies. That "if you meet one Aspie, you've met one Aspie". That we have different combinations of sensory issues, traits and behaviors, and at different amplitudes. And then all kinds of combinations of comorbid conditions...or perhaps none at all.

Some of us are formally diagnosed, while others remain self-diagnosed. For me, the most important "tool" in helping me arrive at such a decision has been the continual interaction between fellow Aspies right here. It's been far more beneficial to me than exclusively reading formal and dry neurological explanations offered by Neurotypicals. Although there are a few good sources IMO like Dr. Tony Attwood or Dr. Simon Baron Cohen.

Doing things in a rigid, methodical manner as a routine? Yes, that's one behavior. But there are so many to consider. You have a lot of reading to catch up on here. To get a nebulous benchmark of such traits and behaviors, you might try taking some standard tests related to autism. Just understand they are tests....and not comprehensive diagnostic tools employed by medical professionals. But at least it might give you something to work with. A starting point at least, apart from reading so many posts here on so many subjects that you might find familiar responses to. You may find you have a lot in common with us that up to this point in your life left you feeling quite alone and alienated in communicating with fellow humans.

That all said, welcome to AC.

Short answer: Go do some research on it and see if you can connect to any of it, doesn't have to be all of it, it is pervasive afterall. Go fill out the AQ and EQ tests. If signs point to it go see your GP or family doctor and ask for a referral.

Welcome!
Welcome!!! I completed several online assessments before deciding to pursue an "official" diagnosis. There are a number out there, but there's a thread somewhere on this site where I posted the links. Does anyone remember where I put those?

Anyway, in the mean time browse around, meet the gang, and make some new friends along the way.
You posted some useful links in my introduction thread, here's a link:
