Just testing the waters here, I've been on WrongPlanet a long time, but that site looks like it's on its last legs, so I'm feeling out my options in case it goes down.

I have sort of an interesting background; I went to gunsmithing school in Colorado and worked in that field a while, I was in tech before that doing IT and software testing work, I've worked in metal fabrication doing machining and welding, and I've worked in the restaurant industry off and on for years, where I'm currently running a grill. I also enjoy bar-tending, having done it briefly professionally and for years as an amateur, have done martial arts in the past and am getting back into it, and am a complete political junky.

Welcome aboard! This is a great site. Very friendly community. That's a diverse experience set. Still smithing?

A very interesting background. I'm a software developer starting my own business and I did Isshinryu Karate during my childhood. I think as more people transfer here they are enjoying our site so I think you like it too.

Not doing too much metalwork at the moment, my tools are packed in a relatives garage, as I'm currently sharing a duplex that doesn't have space for them. Too bad, I'm thinking of getting back into paintball, and I've had this crazy idea for a lever action marker for years that would be perfect with the new First Strike balls on the market, and I have an old gun to scavenge for parts if I had access to my lathe and milling machine.

Wow, so no CO2? Just lever action? That would be awesome, reduced gear weight and so on.

Well, I was actually thinking either 12g co2 or a very slim HPA tank in the butt, my main idea was that with a lever action I could move the magazine underneath the barrel, use a rising chamber controlled by the lever to feed, and because the top of the gun would be clear of any feed device or ball tube, I could put a good set of ladder sights on it, since paintballs have such an arced trajectory. Basically, I want to build something that's light weight and accurate with good first shot hit capability, that would encourage me to play a more deliberate game rather than hosing paint as fast as I can pull the trigger. Plus, I think a lever gun would look cool, in a way that was totally different than what everyone else has. Of course, then I'd have to build a set of paint revolvers to go with it, maybe in the .40 caliber blowgun paintballs...

Hey, Dox. Greetings to a fellow political junky. :) Sounds like you have a wide variety of talents. My best friend/business partner is a genius in metal fabrication. Are you self-taught? Must be a bummer not having access to your equipment when you've got a creative idea churning in your head.

Welcome, and hope you enjoy yourself.

I learned most of my machining in gunsmithing school, and picked up the welding at a community college, I'm pretty fearless around most mechanical things, but welding equipment in particular didn't seem like a good place to learn by trial and error. I mostly get creative in the kitchen these days, the place that I work at is really good about letting me come up with menu items or changing procedures around, so I have an outlet there. I'm a self taught cook, so I read constantly to drill ideas for dishes and flavor combinations into my head, which comes in handy when we have too much of something or a mistake was made and we need to figure out how to utilize something. I've been on a hot streak lately, I solved a storage problem we were having due to accumulating ingredients for stock faster than we were selling stock by teaching my chef an old French technique of making double and triple stocks that are more concentrated and can be diluted to order, salvaged a coworker's mistake that blew up a bunch of our house-made bacon dogs by turning them into a deep fried Jersey Ripper special, and reconfigured our closing procedures to save a lot of labor and make opening easier as well. I'm 'out' at work, and they really appreciate what I bring to the table, my chef is constantly amazed at how much esoteric but useful cooking stuff I know, and how I think about what I'm doing and constantly suggest ways to do it better.

That's great! Sounds like you've found your niche. I have a degree in Food and Nutritional Science, but I could never do all that. Kudos to you!

Welcome, Dox.

That's one impressive skill set! You'll find a lot of people here with a wide range of interests and experiences. I'm no chef or gunsmith, but I'm a qualified Aikido Shihan, though I don't have time to actually teach.

You sound fascinating. It will be good to have you around.
