I find it very hard to connect with people.

The Penguin

Chilly Willy The Penguin
One of my biggest issues with my life, it very hard for me to connect with people. I'm not into following trends, sports, reality TV, news, drinking, smoking, parties and many other things. I know many people like talking about movies, music artist, and celebrities. The thing is, my knowledge is very limited in that area. I just don't have the memory for that type of thing.

For things I do like such as Lego, model trains and talking about technical stuff about technology only make a small percent of the world population. I mean, if I meet some stranger want to talk about Lego, they might find I may be weird. I have accepted to do things alone since it to hard to find people into the stuff I'm into. Even at times I do find someone into some of the things I like, it's still very hard for me to have a conversation with them. Example, I was part of the model train group at one time. I did like everything to do with trains, but I didn't socialize much at all. I didn't know what to say. Most of the time they have conversations not related to trains and on topics I can't relate to. Also, all the members were like double my age. I just find it very frustrating.

That's too bad. I belong to a group that meets once a month for plastic modelling. They're mostly in my age group (40-50-60) and tend to stay focused only on the hobby. Yet I don't see any of them as Aspies. Meetings usually last for about two hours and sometimes I can go the entire time saying nothing at all. But it's really my only one real social contact on a regular basis, so I stick with it. Usually if I have a project I bring it's something I can easily discuss, although most of them aren't into my niche of plastic modelling.

Most of us here struggle with connecting with people, just accept that you will probably have to do your hobbies alone, Its not that bad, Ive spent 80% of my life alone as i know i get on peoples nerves when they are together with me for a prolonged period. I remember going out drinking with people from work to be sociable but i hated it, it was boring drinking talking about work, i am happy staying in with my pets. I see you like chilly willy, i still watch cartoons too and love sylvester and tweety, porkey pig and sponge bob, but i have to hide that from "normal people", but i still watch as it makes me happy, a good night in for me is a lovely meal and film with snacks with my animals.

If b you wait around for others to come with you you will be miserable, I hate celebrities, and drinking, but i love painting, massage and churning my own butter gives me immense pleasure. I like going out for walks at night , none else dose, none likes the kind of films i do as they are old. Noone would come hitchhiking with me in cornwall on holiday so i went alone and met some good friends from Birmingham. Its better to be your own man than a sheep.

No pets here, but yeah, I love cartoons too. When I'm not going out, I'm content to eat a good meal and then relax with a book or by watching a film I like.

So true! We have to find ways to enjoy time by ourselves, because we won't always be around other people.

And I've always wondered what it's like to churn butter. It must take a lot of work, but I bet it's satisfying to be able to use something you made yourself. :)

Thanks.

Both model railroading and plastic modelling suffer one critical issue. They're inherently expensive hobbies to sustain. With target markets outside the US consisting of people more than willing to pay obscene amounts of money for their fix. Consequently they've become hobbies for the old...those with disposable income much more than kids who originally dominated such hobbies who have largely turned to video gaming. It's sad...and the demographics don't bode well for the industry.

I just wish I was not so dam broke. I did had a friend that sold all the model railroading stuff he had. But I don't have the money to setup the layout nor the space. I'm hopping to get a better income one day so I can start a layout.

I hear ya. I make my projects stretch because of the cost. Contain them usually to no more than two or three a year. When I run into a problem or quandry, I may take weeks to work it out. Not like the old days when I'd crank out a model once a week as a kid! I'm afraid though my eyesight will eventually fail to the point where I have to give it all up.

Yep, as a renter space keeps me out of model railroading apart from the cost. Although I still have my original Aurora Postage Stamp (N Gauge) trains, track and transformer...nearly tucked away in the closet.

Have you looked into finding a LEGO group in your area? usually called LUGs.
I am in one where I live, in fact, I am the treasurer. I am also a director for our local LEGO convention. I have made quite a few friends in my group.

There is but there focus is Star Wars. I found the group was better when they use to cover other lines but things change since they change organizers.

The one in Toronto focus was MindStorm which is a Lego line I do enjoy.

Here is a site that lists all the LUGs in the world: https://lan.lego.com/lugs
If you lived in the Bay area (California, you would be more than welcome at our meetings).
