I just went to my first Quaker meeting

Mystic Turtles
Have been wanting to go to one for 10 years. It was in a cottage next to a small church, and when I walked in, people were completely quiet for around 10 minutes. Then the new people were asked to share our names, and then the leader said that we would start "worship." It was an hour of total quiet and silence, then the leader asked for "joys and sorrows." One woman talked about how she had been at the home of a relative, and they started to talk about the pope, and her family member said he wasn't a fan because the pope was a socialist. Then there was more silence, before two other people made additions. The hour went by fast. The biggest impression I had was the silence, so it was very comfortable for who I am. I've been reading about the Quaker beliefs, and am drawn to their idea of simplicity as a spiritual practice and will go back again next week.

I’ve been a practicing Quaker for well over 25 years. Welcome to the Meeting, RemyZee. I love the silence of the worship. I’ve generally found Quakers to be accepting of people from all walks of life.

How are they for respecting touch-aversion? I came real close to visiting a meeting in Lake Wales, then the lady started telling me how friendly everyone was in a "huggy" way.

This was my first one, but one of the two things that stood out was that there seemed to be an observance of personal space. No one tried to hug me or even shake my hand and the room was set up so there was space between people. It really was the opposite of over bearing.

Meetings I am familiar with - many - do not hug unless they know each other well. No one should just jump up and physically assault you.

In some meetings, people will shake hands at rise of meeting. Or hold hands in a circle.

Wear your do not touch t-shirt. Most Quakers respect the needs of people with disabilities.

Unless things have changed, the Lake Wales group is small. They are not a full meeting, but a worship group under the care of another Meeting. Effectively, this means they don’t do all the administrative work and committee meetings.

I like to pair a visit to the Lake Wales group with a visit to Bok Tower Garden.

Does anyone have a good Definition of The Holy Spirit in Christianity?

I guess it may be Logos. That may be also bad guess.

HI there @lunarious

The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity in Christian thinking.
It was the Holy Spirit that fell on the believers at Pentecost - (this feast day is coming up soon). The Holy Spirit is the person of the trinity that empowers people (see some of the things that happened after Pentecost by reading the book of Acts). The Holy Spirit also motivates people, and is the presence of God with us here and now.

There is a lot more that could be siad, but lets start there.

We need terror , and horror movies maybe. And action movies. I work with Hollywood.

The Defense Department produce best movies, ... but The Holy Ghost...

We can talk about Christianity another time.

PS: I thought when i work on my prayer-beeds i get good thoughts and good ideas. It is relaxing.

The Holy Spirit has many roles I would add as well as a , helper, protector intercessor, advocate, strengthener, standby, comforter, counsellor, baptiser and a sanctifier.

This may be interesting to you Lunarious and explains about the Holy Spirit and the link below as well.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the church RemyZee. Keep going.

When The Angels Arrive The Devils go away - Islamic Quote (or inverted?)

There's a tradition or narration from The Household of The Prophet: Houses where Qur'an is recited light up for the Heavenly creatures (Angels) like stars shine for the inhabitants of The Earth

I don't understand where this Holy Ghost is

Hi Lunarious, the Holy Ghost is in Heaven and has a divine source. I believe I had a beautiful vision of it once and it was breathtaking.

When we are born we are also born with the Spirit of God and it exists within the spirit. At Baptism Christians are Baptised again and receive more Holy Spirit which is indwelling in the body. You know human beings have a spirit, soul, body and other members. Christians when baptised can receive gifts of the Holy Spirit which can be used to support the church. One of the gifts is healing which my rector at church has performed during services as well. God decides which gift is most useful to all Christians.

If you are good, other "Christian members" has Defenestrated me, from car window.

My skill endowed by you say Holy Spirit, is in Islam we have Angels called Hell Angels. I'm not talking about motorcycle dudes.

Hell Angels would be like BK says NATO "Peacekeepers", but better.

74:31 We have assigned only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number merely a stumbling block for the faithless, and so that those who were given the Book may be reassured, and the faithful may increase in [their] faith, and so that those who were given the Book and the faithful may not be in doubt, and so that the faithless and those in whose hearts is a sickness may say, ‘What did Allah mean by this description?’ Thus does Allah lead astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes. No one knows the hosts of your Lord except Him, and it is just an admonition for all humans.

I would appreciate a church that's a cross between the Quaker way...and that episode of Letterkenney when they did the town hall roundtable on what the best flavor of chips are.

You’re looking for a Quaker business meeting. (I haven’t seen Letterkenny and am guessing. And if true, it would be a joke.)
