I keep going through headphones/ear buds

I seem to go through a lot of of headphones and ear buds and my dad gets frustrated at me for this. I can't really explain why but I think it might have to do with not being able to sit still and moving around a lot. The plastic at either ends always end up exposed and the wires disconnect which causes a deadened sound or one side to go out.

Yeah, I've had that problem too. It's much worse when they're $300 in-ear noise-cancelling ones that you accidentily step on on the floor. :D

Does the plastic cord seem to crack and eventually break on you ? I tried fixing the ear buds I have but don't really know what I was doing. I was connecting the colors to the other end accordingly but maybe loosening up the threads to connect both ends wasn't such a smart idea :/

I did the same things with my first PSP lol It was on the floor and I accidentally stepped on them and cracked the screen. This is why I'm dead careful with devices now, especially my worthless Ipod touch that I can't jailbreak nor add any apps to it because you can't make free Apple accounts without the need for a credit card. I guess Aspies can be careless with their possessions :D

Not the cord specifically, it's usually the ear part (not the bud, the part that attaches to it) that is wears out the easiest. I suppose a big reason for them wearing out on me could be from stuffing them into my pockets. How do you usually carry yours around?

(Currently, I spy a pair of headphones on my living room floor; how do they always end up there?)

Yep, I have this problem, too. I find that the wires in the cord disconnect. It helps to wind duct tape tightly all found the bit where the the wire leaves the earpiece, or the bit where the cable leaves the plug, because that's where it's most vulnerable. Some shops might reconnect it for you. I have rather expensive Bose headphones which I've resurrected numerous times.

Depending on where you use them for, I might recommend looking for a pair of wireless headphones? I've had issues with wired headphones I use for my computer for years until I finally managed to get a pair of wireless ones. Haven't had issues since.

As for earbuds; I tend to go through a lot but for some reason they tend to "blow up" eventually because I have them at the loudest (and hush; before you say, I'm destroying my ears with it. If I'm out I prefer to listen to music instead of hearing traffic, which still at times blares over my music no matter how loud I play it; which makes me wonder if traffic isn't as harmful for my ears as well).

Anyway; I tend to last a bit longer with more expensive earbuds though. Cheap ones often break either at the cable (especially in winters) and I sometimes lose the rubber tips on those in-ear things. I've fixed losing those rubbers by buying the same brand and type every time so if I lose one and buy now ones, I at least have one of those rubbers as back-up. Saves me from buying new ones every single time.

Suppose there's also a notion of just being more careful with your stuff. I haven't stepped on my earbuds for years since I never place them anywhere they can be stepped on (my iPod with earbuds goes in my hoodie, and my hoodie goes on a hook on the wall when I get home).

Back in my teens when I didn't have cash to buy new earbuds every time they broke, I'd often end up having these frankenstein earbuds made out of different sets I cut up and just connecting the cables and taping it together.

Same thing with my ear buds, they tend to always break near the earbud part or near the base where it plugs into. I had some expensive Sony studio quality headphones for Christmas and ended up causing a kink somewhere within the wiring. The cord didn't break but there was something wrong with them when I could only hear one side :/ I never really carry mine around but have them hooked into the computer 24/7. It might be because some songs cause a emotional excitement with me and I end up being restless and move around a lot.

What about exposed wires ? Wouldn't that cause the wiring to make contact with the others ? I don't necessarily toss them right away but would sort of fight with them a bit until it becomes a pain. I probably destroyed the earphone jack on the computer trying to move the plug around to get sound on both sides.

Wireless headphones sound like my best option at the moment as I'm not quite as skilled at fixing them Lol I understand listening to songs or videos loudly as I need to escape my neighbors at times. It makes me less anxious because I worry about people hearing me rant or talk to myself.

I'm not used to living in a suburban neighborhood or sort of in an alley way where people could literally see inside our house and see what we're up too. I have conversations with one neighbor named James all the time while smoking out in the garage. He would even banter with me when I cough by saying something like "sounds like lung cancer to me".

I wind the duct tape round that part of the headphones when I first buy them, before they have a chance to break - it makes them sturdier and less likely bend and break. I wrap it round the outside - no exposed wires.
