i really need help. i have a noise sensitivity that is really bad. clicking, tapping, whistling, and many many more noises drive me crazy, i have to leave my class at least once a day because of the overload of noises i get. i have a panic attack, a melt down whatever you want to call it, i feel jittery, i can't think, then i start crying, i get depressed and feel like crap, it ruins my day and i'm always scared that a noise will trigger it. does anyone have any advice for me i really need help. just something to make my days better.

Have tried talking to a school counselor? I have a feeling they would be able to offer you some kind of help.

Just hang in there and be strong. Things will get better.

there is something in place at school through the counselors but it does not help be before the anxiety attacks, it helps me leave the class when i need to and sometimes i can go into other rooms for tests but it does not really help while i'm in class or when the teacher is talk. that is when it is the worse because of the other studints

Maybe you could look into getting some kind of sound deadening ear plug type things for when you're just working in a classroom. Like, have them out to get instructions from the teacher about the lesson and then plug them in. Or, if you start to feel like you might be getting overloaded with sound, plug them in and go from there. Or maybe you can get some that just make everything a bit quieter so you can still hear a bit, but not the smaller noises. I have the same problem with noises, but it only sends me into meltdown if I've already had something go wrong.

thank you for the advice. and mine can happen at any time but it happens most when i'm upset, sick, tired, woke up wrong, something threw me off of my routine or not haveing the best day in general. my morning routine is not respected much in my house cause they don't understand, it makes my days more stressful and more likely for me to have a meltdown because of the noises

I found that, working in an office, finding a CD that I like and just playing that one CD, over and over through the earphones, really helps. Of course in a classroom setting you need to be able to hear the teacher, but maybe you can come to some sort of compromise? At least you could try to get permission to use an ipod or whatever in certain situations.

I also find that some noises do "grate" on me and make me very anxious and unable to concentrate, but not quite to the extent of having meltdowns.

i have tryed earplugs they didn't help very much and playing white noise on my mp3 player and it helps but the teachers don't like me having the earbuds in and i am allowed to have one in but that does not help very much, and the noise can sometimes drown out the teacher which is a bad thing. i just don't know if there is more that i can do to help myself, i really hope there is

I'm in the same situation. My family doesn't understand or respect me either... except noises like those don't give me meltdowns; they just bug me to death.
I don't know what advice to give you, but I hope it gets better. I would just tell the teacher that the noises bother me, if he/she is the understanding type, and see if they can do anything about it.

thank you, and my teachers know all of them were told but of course they don't understand it ans even after they were told i've had teachers cause my meltdowns by making noises. i'm also scared to talk to my teachers a little so that doesn't help with being able to tell them what i need.

I get what you mean about having noise sensitivity, mealtimes drive me insane, but I don't have meltdowns.

I can see how awful it must be for you...and I don't have any help to give, just my sympathies :)

How do you get white noise on your iPod?
That would be great for walking about in the street. Maybe not biking though...
All the loud noises in the street make me jump like nothing on earth/

Here's a site with a free brown noise file (I think you have to have to start a free account to download stuff from the site, which is a little annoying but not that big of a deal):

Omg, that is really sad to hear you going through that. Hasn't anyone made any suggestions? Hey, I was debating saying this here or somewher else but maybe it's good info for others. I have the same noise sensitivity problems, but they are a little better now. I have tinnitus and that makes it worse. I think you may also have tinnitus Layla. If you do, then I tried like a bunch of things to get rid of it and some things actually helped. Sound generators and audio (music/sounds) therapy definitely helped.

Sorry to hear about that, I remember knowing somebody who is literally very sounds sensitive which was really the downside really. :(

He actually tried wearing ear defenders and they did help him a little which was a good thing but then he kinda did look like one of those DJ's but the feeling of him feeling how you are with noise just makes it seem difficult but we can't blame you for it.

I have such bad sensitivity I used to walk around with those little foam ear plugs in my ears then over top of them the ear muffs. It started to hurt like hell just keeping them in but I was afraid of every sound I would come in contact with. I didn't want to go anywhere for fear I had to put all those things in my ear and then I wouldn't be able to hear speech or hold any conversation with anyone around me. It just made me even more alone and more strange looking because I guarantee you there weren't very many others walking around like that and tuning themselves completely out of the world. It's funny I actually feel I tried to tune out the world in other ways forever because of how much it hurt to even be in it, but with the earplugs and muffs I was truly tuned out. I couldn't hear anything except the stupid noisesa lready coming form my ears lol. It's a good thing my sensitivity is att leats better to the point I don't need to use all that ear protection anymoe, but I really feel I did more damage than good to my ears with all of that even though at the time it was the only answer;
