Does anyone know what recourse a person has if their bank account is cleaned out by someone getting their DEBIT card number? I know that CREDIT cards are protected. Evidently a DEBIT card can be filed as a CREDIT so a passcode isn't needed. I appreciate any information.

I didn't think they could do that - at least with a normal bank debit card, unless it's a debit card from a credit card company? Contact your bank immediately and explain what happened. At the very least, cancel the card and get a new one.

Yes, they can do that if it's marked with something like Visa or Mastercard. And yes, your bank should protect you against fraud in this sense assuming you've never ever allowed that person to use your card (or lie to the bank and tell them you've never done it). If you have ever once in the entire history of the account loaned your card to that person, then they are considered a fully authorized user of that account and the bank will NOT refund you any lost money from their activities with your account. <-- PAY ATTENTION here, this is need to know info for anyone with a debit card!

Call your bank's main number and go to the lost/stolen option. The folks in that department know what to do next to help you recover your funds.

Consumer Reports is the best answer. Otherwise you can google this and then call your bank once you understand the lingo. The bank might ask for a monthly fee for security. It can be worth it. Good luck!!!!!!!

It happened to my friend Julia. They got $590 by using her debit card. Myself, I have Lifelock and have had it for about a year. The peace of mind was worth it and now hearing what happened to Julia I'm even more glad I have it.

My parents account was hacked a few years back. They used it to gain access to my sisters account which was linked. They cleaned out my sisters account into my parents, and then cleaned that out.

My parents contacted the bank who gave them a rough time of it. Then when my sister tried to register her loss, they blamed my parents for stealing her money. After several threats of contacting the banking ombitsman, the bank relented and sorted the mess for them. It took a few months, but they got all the money back.

I understand every time someone contacts the banking ombitsman, there is an automatic fine for the bank (or it used to be that way). It was about $900. My dad threatened to contact the ombitsman individually on each of complaints (he had about 6 of them and was willing to find more), that's when the bank became cooperative.
