iPhone or Android?

Exploding Radical
I'm heavily into learning foreign languages, and I want a smartphone so that I can drill vocabulary anywhere. I will most likely not use the phone for anything else, not even calls or texts, except maybe some language apps. Which would you recommend?

You forgot WIndows Phone :p

Edit: Though I'm not sure if there are any language learning apps around...

I'm not surprised. I don't know anything about cell phones. On the other hand, most language apps I see have download links for Android or iPhone. I've never seen a Windows phone link. Plus, I'm already biased against it because it has Windows in the name. :p

Heh, fair enough. Though it seems that Windows 8 and Windows phone have fairly decent compatibility and some apps that sync on both. Considering WP is kinda new compared to Android and iOS it might be a reason why it doesn't show up that much.

The big pro for Android is that it's a bit more open source and such and probably features a lot more free apps. I think that most quality stuff on iOS is paid (at least, I know that from my experiences with my iPad) and thus also needs to be approved by Apple to even end up on iTunes.

The obvious pro for iOS would be that you know it's been approved and most likely tested and there seem to be less compatibility issues with the Apple devices. I can't say the same about Android (and yes I have my experience with Android as well. App X works on this tablet, but doesn't work on the other and the same can probably be said about Android phones and how some apps give issues).

I have an IPhone 5 - I used to have an Android. I switched because it seemed that everyone at school had an IPhone and they thought it was just the neatest thing. The big thing (and probably only thing) I absolutely hate about my IPhone is the keyboard. It sucks! It's small (I have small hands too) and it HAS NO SWYPE!!! I can't tell you how much that bothers me - to the point where I will probably not get another IPhone. I used to whiz through text and typing with SWYPE and now it's an absolute mess! And you know what's really funny is I read somewhere on line that the person who invented SWYPE actually had some part in the making of the iPhone, but I guess Apple didn't sign on for it - only Android. I also had some really cool moving screen apps on my Android that the IPhone just doesn't have. I think everyone gets the iPhone for the name really. I'm not that impressed by it.

Android and open source have a lot of features, but as Oni said little approval and compatibility issues...I use Androids and now have the Galaxy S5 after holding an iPhone 5s in my hand first...I do not like the limited apps in the Apple phones but do think they have great features and ease of usage...I hear a lot of good things about the windows phones, but still have a bad taste for Microsoft and the OS upgrade lock ins that keep Bill in money and us in confusion...as nurseangela said, the Apple stuff is trendy and popular, but is it for the right reasons?

If u don't need the full features of a phone I think most iphone apps will run on an iPod, and it might reduce your costs.

I prefer Android. I prefer larger screens, higher specs, easy access to the battery and not locked to the Apple business model. I don't care about trends, what poplar and stuff. I just don't like how controlling Apple is.

I'd say go for android. Apple products are overpriced to begin with, it's really not worth buying an iPhone if language apps are the only use you'll get out of it.

I know. People keep saying it a premium product. But here is the deal. To go from a 16GB phone to 32GB, Apple charge you $100 more for the phone. Go from 32GB to 64GB another $100. Now, you can buy a 64GB MicroSD Card for $57 and able to add this to most phones except iPhone. But you see Apple don't want you to be able to add MicroSD cards. Instead, they want to get as much money as possible from the consumer. I'm sorry but I don't agree with Apple idea on this.

No booing please. I have that dreaded IPhone that is hard as hell to text on and I said I would never get another one. All that aside, they said it was time for me to be able to upgrade my phone. The iPhone 6 is coming out and I hate change.

My question is - Do you all just trade in your current phone for a new one? I have always bought the new one with a discount. Is there a reason to keep the old phone? And if I trade in my iPhone 5, do they have access to all my information on my old phone?

I am a really bad person. I break my old phone when a new modal comes out and enjoy exchange for a new one. I done 3 upgrades so far.

I let my phones run out the extended warranty, then cut a good deal with my provider to own the phone outright...I asked about a trade in,but they were only going to give me $30 for it so I kept it for the cameras, some apps and use it as a music player...I put my Galaxy S5 in my hand for under $200 about one month after it's release date

I've never traded in my phones because it's never occurred to me...and my last two phones were worthless by the time my contract was up anyway.

This one I'll probably keep until it's absolutely and definitively dead. My usage is remarkably similar to Nitro's. I don't need to go out of my way to upgrade when I don't really care.

It really depends on what you want. I alwayas had Android for Smartphone and Tablet as well.
Recently I replaced a Samsung by a Fairphone, because i wanted a dual sim with longer battery life. The Fairphone offers these features and comes already rooted and has more internal storage.
While that's the perfect choice for me, for someone just using it for a few language learning programs something simpler or even a tablet might be more appropriate.
And for the language learning programs themselves: they do exist, but don't expect all of them for free.

Well in the first time in history, Apple have the balls to have a much larger screen. I don't count iPhone 5 since it only only upgrade by 0.5 inches and most companies during that time had phones larger than 4 inches. However, the iPhone 6 does have a decent size screen. I still would never buy and iPhone but glad they learning to have balls now.
