Is the mic on? I don't think its... HALLO? HALLOOOOO?

Ha - I hate havin to get up and introduce myself. Mind goes blank every time.

So, I'm here on account of a member here telling me that this was the place to be and - they're right - the joint is jumpin; its alive. Seems to have a lot of super-nice people and an open, friendly atmosphere. Not a bar-fly inhabited sewing circle; which is good.

That and I'm a dad to two boys, a dog and one bush-pig who thinks he's a dog (maybe he's a dog who thinks he's a bush-pig, we're not certain on this point but he doesn't seem too worried about it in either case). One of the boys has PDD-NOS, which is the main reason I'm here.

I started out on the journey (a journey that began long before he was diag with being on the AS) desperately trying to find a way to fix him but every fix needed fixing, every pill needed its own pill and every answer solicited a retort.

So - after a much needed edit - the short of it being, I'm here, not seeking a fix for my son, but rather to learn how to be a better parent to a young man, who just happens to be on the Spectrum. :)

Hi DJones

welcome to af.png

Hi DJones - All kids should be raised to help build confidence and develop skills of all kinds. I lament not knowing what my short-comings were as I grew up. Only by being curious about things and being naive was I able to have a variety of experiences. I didn't fear much, but I was full of insecurity. I didn't know that my ASD traits were counterproductive toward being like other people. Since we see our behavior and thoughts as normal, we never connect the dots to grasp why we are treated as odd or inept. If a kid understands where his strengths and weaknesses are, he can better navigate the environment around him and develop a sense of direction in life. Yes, I believe that anyone can be president, but don't ignore the reality of competition. Accepting failure and success both require a strong sense of self. Explore everything with your kids and watch the success surface.

You're right - I've said elsewhere - we need understanding and encouragement. We don't need FIXED. You sound like a great dad. I think you'll like this site.

Welcome! The mic was on :-) Thanks for coming in. I really love it when parents come in for a deeper perspective. I hope you like it here.

Welcome. Lots of good people here. Enjoy reading the posts so much, am learning a lot. :)

Ahh...prototyping board, it is! Haven't seen one of those in use for a good while. That an O-Scope probe tip in there? Pulled my board out recently when one of the kids had an Electricity and Magnetism section in his science class. They just don't teach anything hands-on anymore; labs are so watered-down, if they exist at all. (somewhere there's a B-9 robot waving his arms: "DANGER, DANGER! RANT AND LONG DIATRIBE TO FOLLOW!") - ok, ok. I'll stop ;)

You're right - I've said elsewhere - we need understanding and encouragement. We don't need FIXED. You sound like a great dad. I think you'll like this site.

Thank you kindly, Pat!

Thanks, Oakland.
The mic was on :)
Good, didn't know. The wise-guy with the laser-pointer in the second row had me distracted ;)

Welcome @DJones to the site, good to hear about it from the perspective of someone beginning to look in. Your son's are lucky young men.

LOL!! My dog isn't the only one who is confused!

Your son's are lucky young men.
Well, they'd both dispute that but thank you!

Welcome! I too come here for deeper understanding and absolutely love it! Not because i have a son on the spectrum but because i meet someone special who is. Everyone here is extremely friendly, helpful, and very non judgmental. I hope you enjoy your stay :)
