Knee Deep In The Dread: Killing my stress with retro FPS games, one bullet at a time

Life is stressful. Stress makes us angry. When we're angry, we want to do stuff that's satisfying but hurts things.

Thankfully, computers give us the ability to do that without going to jail... because an engine called Zandronum exists.

Multiplayer DOOM, support for thousands of mods, what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, how about Oblige, a program that makes new levels for you to play?!

Then there's Quake, gotta love that one. When I feel like flying through the air I might play a little Xonotic, and sometimes a little campaign action never hurt on Ion Fury.

What's your favorite?

For the Gameboy Advance, I like Wolfenstein 3D - been able to take down the leader of a certain group of "naughty Germans" while wielding a Chain Gun is pretty satisfying, while trying to find secret places to collect treasure keeps me coming back.

For the Playstation 2 (or 3), I like the original Red Faction - especially as the environment is entirely destructible, you get a wide variety of weapons and some of the character interactions and ways you can mess around in the game always put a smile on my face. For example:
Technician: "I'm not taking sides in this conflict".
Me: (Pulls out my gun)
Technician: (Immediately cowers/runs away) "Wait - I'm on your side!"

Then of course, there's the cruel joy of having a medic heal you - only to reward him by sticking a remote charge to him and watching as he runs around, flailing his arms in the air and screaming/hollering like a monkey:

In the words of Bugs Bunny, "Boy, ain't I a stinker?"

I used to play Doom a lot, way back when. Was a huge fan.

These days... no. FPS games in general require a lot of mouse use (and aiming with a freaking analog stick is torment, so that's not an option) and I cant do that.

Never could aim worth a crap anyway. Doom worked because I didnt need to. Get shotgun, attack absolutely everything point-blank, rinse and repeat. Hard to miss when the monster fills the screen. Also didnt have to aim up or down, so that helped.

And that's about it. Heck, looking at my Steam game list, the last FPS game I even touched was Devil Daggers, back in 2018, and that one is... basically impossible.

There are a lot of retro fps games i like. I think my favorite of all time is either quake or duke nukem 3d.
