I just had mid term for the semester early this week. I have been getting good grades so far (mostly A but I have gotten 2 that were A-). I have about 2-3 grades per week most weeks. I had hoped to get some friends while there, but it is not really looking all that hopeful. They are friendly towards me for the most part though. I had a problem of my group starting the experiments without me while I was gathering supplies, but I think that has been worked out. I am really enjoying doing the science experiments. We have advanced from learning the basics of using a pipet to using actual lab chemicals. The other day we did one where we measured temperature changes when water was added to two different chemicals and had to determine which purpose which chemical could be applied towards. The one got cold when water was added and the other got hot. There is also a lot of interesting textbook material to read. In class, I think I actually ask the most questions compared to anyone else there. Hopefully it is seen as a positive sign that I want to learn and to make certain that I am understanding everything correctly. My lack of tech skills has caused some close calls on projects not getting done on time, but so far things have worked out ok. My main teacher has been very understanding of this issue and I have been getting to learn quite a bit about computers lately. It feels almost like an additional class I'm having to learn so much in order to complete my home assignments which I often have had to do at a library. The interview lesson was pretty discouraging though. First it was stressed that things like eye contact were very important. That was probably a hint towards me and a couple of others in the class. We were then paired up to practice. First, I had to role play as the person being interviewed. Apparently, I made too much eye contact then. The other student said something about counting to a certain number ( I think it was 4). I asked how I was supposed to think what to say if I am counting and was then told that you don't count.
Afterwards, it was my turn to role play like I was a hiring manager. I was supposed to ask the interview questions but I only got 2 or 3 words out before busting out laughing. I kept trying but couldn't get out but a word or two at a time between all the laughter. The other student took over and made a bit of a show of just smoothly asking herself the questions and answering them. So in summary, I think I'm doing pretty good with the actual science parts of the class, the online assignments are a little stressful due to not being exposed to computers much at all, but at least I'm finally getting to learn. The interview skills have me concerned though.
