I don't know a lot about it, but Photonics could be a very useful field in the future, used in quantum computing.Does anyone have experience with this field of study? It is one of the degrees available at the nearest community college.
Is it interesting? My degree is Physics. I got it at Georgia Tech, specializing in lasers and optics. If I went through those same classes today, my degree would be in electro-optics. That degree didn't exist yet in the 1970s.
I liked to scatter fine particles in the area and shine the pointer laser to see the entire light path as a child. Didn't really have access to lasers beyond that. I did however, enjoy my electromagnetic kit. That would probably be the closest thing to it that I had growing up.It was for me. Your mileage could vary. I was already interested in lasers as a child, and electronics was my first special interest (in the sense of building/repairing as opposed to just using). My first laser was a helium-neon .8 milliwatt laser that ran off house current. It didn't take me long to amplitude modulate the beam and send music over laser to a remote receiver.
When I was in the Air Force, I worked with an airborne laser system. At my first long-term civilian job after the Air Force, I helped set up one of the early outdoor laser shows, and then maintained the system for over a year.
