Let's Go to the Mall

West Edmonton Mall (WEM) is the second largest shopping mall in North America by size, at 5.3M square feet, just behind MSP's Mall of America (5.6M square feet), which was developed and owned by the same Edmonton-based family.

With over 800 businesses, it has the highest store count of any shopping centre in the Western hemisphere, but it also doubles as an entertainment complex, with the world's largest wave pool, the world's largest indoor lake, a hockey rink, amusement park, go-kart, mini-golf, shooting range, casino and two hotels. Oddly, it also has a car dealership.

That is so cool. I've never seen a mall like that before, and the ones where I live are pretty big. I have seen pictures of something similar (besides Mall of America) but I think it was in Las Vegas.

The pool and the European street scene look especially appealing.

I would imagine that most of the stores are of the high-end, expensive variety though...

Perhaps The Forum Shops, which is pretty cool and one of my favourite parts of Las Vegas.

There's a pretty good mix of stores and services, from a dollar store to fancy stuff like Tiffany's.

I've been there!

Is the indoors rollercoaster still a thing?

Man, I really miss Edmonton

The Mindbender roller coaster just shut down in January, but the rest of the rides are there and lots of families having fun.

It's good to see it hasn't died, yet. Most malls are now clinically dead with only two or three stores as life support.

In Western Canada, most malls in the major cities are doing okay and some are doing better than ever. The big exception would be Edmonton's City Centre Mall - which was reliant on those who worked downtown and with many organizations having fully or partially switched to remote work, most of the stores have closed or relocated.

Holy crap your malls where you live are amazing. When I look at the photos, it makes me feel happy and in a good mood. I usually don’t like going to the mall because it’s expensive and people are everywhere. Thanks for sharing.

I've been there too, though it was a very long time ago. At the time, it was the biggest mall in the world.

One of these days, I'm planning on going down to the Aventura Mall. Largest mall here in Florida and the third largest mall in the entire US.
