Little rant…

I’ve been suspecting myself for a while now. Whether I’m on the spectrum or not I’ve some depression and anxiety issue building up for years. I just went to the clinic for a referral letter, but the doctor tried to talk me out of my situation before know much of me. Of course I get shut down by telling the doctor about my suspicion for being ND, he simply asked if I have any issue socialising, I answered a simple yes and the doctor proceed to “analyse” my situation told me that if you don’t have broad interest like playing sports (I do lol) and gossip about the celebrities, of course people don’t like you. Sure, I don’t like making new friends, but I never even mention people don’t like me and I felt so insulted. Sigh

Excuse me? Yes, that's insulting.

Also excuse me, how about looking at it the other way round, why does someone have to be interested in the first place in company of people with whom they have nothing interesting to talk about?
I tried to block out his words and stayed silent, mostly just him talking, and at some point he even said he dosen't want to be my friend if I am this boring. I mean, I dont wanna be friends with someone who like gossiping all day either.... I am glad I found this community and know it is not my fault to like something that is not popular. At last he asked if I am suicidal and he just yelled don't die on my way out. I feel so ridiculus I laughed.

@ithinktheniexist
I would highly recommend trying to find a different doctor. This person sounds wildly inappropriate and an inadequate match to offer any sort of medical or mental health care to you. Please do not take his comments to heart because there is something wrong with his delivery of care from what you shared here.

He is just a general out patient doctor but I have to see him to get a referral letter since its how the system works. He was usually very thorough with general sickness, even though I had mentally prepared for bad comments I never expect something like that from a doctor...

Maybe he thought he was being funny or something, even though I don’t see anything funny at all about what he said. Either way, hopefully you can let his comments roll off you like water off a duck’s back.

There are several online psychology tests one can take that may help with sorting some of this out. Do understand they are not diagnostic, per se, and they are subjective.

Yes, I did all of them and they all came back with the same result so I decided to find a professional as my counseller suggested. I know it would be a tough process since I am an adult and not a boy.

Some doctors simply know nothing outside of their general area of practice. You will have to find someone who specializes in autism, or at least has some understanding of it.

I've had a doctor that was just fine in whenever I saw him for standard issues, but things suddenly went totally awry when a serious problem developed. Probably inexperience in the specialty, plus biases he would have had to un-learn were he to go into that specialty. Don't give up persuing an referral but not with him.

What? So you have to be into playing sports or celebrity gossip or similar mainstream interests for people to like you? What utter nonsense!!

In most metropolitan areas, you should be able to find a psychologist that specializes in adult autism. You can call one of the many autism centers that specialize in children, but only to ask if they recommend someone who specializes in adults. It literally took me about 10 minutes to find someone. The only thing that is "tough" about the process is the time it takes to actually get an appointment and the money you might have to pay, but do talk with their billing department first, as they might know the proper medical coding to get you a deep discount on the pricing. Mine did. I thought I was going to have to pay a few thousand, but only paid a few hundred.

I hate doctors like that. I’m so sorry you had to experience that. I would feel so offended and uncomfortable about that. Your opinions should always be taken into account and not push away as if they mean nothing. I would try and find a doctor that has experience with autism and diagnosis in your area. Don’t give up!

I have to agree that doctors always try and persuade you into things that don’t match up. Like I had trouble with the general sleep doctor at my consultations for a sleep study. He said I should not be taking sleep medication, but recommends to take gabapentin for my restless leg syndrome. Like that doesn’t even make sense. My doctor was shocked and told me to not do that. I totally agree with her.

I had a doctor tell me outright that doctors don't do what you describe. She told me that doctors are smart and experienced and know how to diagnose people with ASD and know exactly how to see through people's masking. She also told me that people claiming to be autistic on social media talk a lot of nonsense about doctors and the diagnostic process.
I don't believe her.
