A family-run charity shop in Anfield is facing a £1,000 repairs bill after thugs smashed a window and damaged a community room for children with autism.

The attempted break-in took place at the Isabella Trust charity shop on Townsend Lane at around 3.30am on Thursday.

An estimated £1,000-worth of damage was caused – but a reinforced window prevented the raiders from entering the building.

The family charity, founded by Tracey and Mike Bowyer, supports parents and carers of children with autistic spectrum disorder or sensory processing difficulties.

Staff members told of their fury at the damage, saying it had cost them valuable money that could have been spent on vital treatment and resources.

Volunteer Nicola Hill told the ECHO: “I think it’s just disgusting that someone would do that to a charity shop. We’ve only been open for a year and everything goes to families in Liverpool.

“The money is going to have to come from the charity. It’s really kicking us in the teeth.

“It’s money that could be spent on training courses for families and professionals. Or it could have been spent on diagnosis.

”We’ve also started a scheme where we loan iPads to non-verbal kids with autism so they can communicate with their families.

“The iPads have specialist apps to help children say they are hungry or in pain. We could have bought two of these iPads with the money we’re spending on repairs.

“There are so many families in Liverpool with autism. We help 70 to 80 people every month through parent support, drop-ins and phone consultations.”

Merseyside Police said that two men with their faces masked were seen loitering in the area at around 3.30am, and neighbours reported some commotion at around 4.00am.

A staff member said: “We’ve watched CCTV footage from the business across the road and it shows two blokes in hoodies and scarves around their faces.

“They lifted the shutter up and threw a brick through the window.

“There’s been over £1,000-worth of damage to the window and also a board which is part of our sensory room for children with autism.”

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
