Lolcows

Does anyone else here have an obsession with lolcows? For those not familiar with the concept, let me put you up to speed:

lolcow. Noun. (plural lolcows) (Internet, slang, derogatory) A person whose eccentric or foolish behaviour can be exploited to amuse onlookers.

I frequently go lolcow documentation websites such as Encylopedia Dramatica and The Lolcow Wiki to educate myself with the latest findings of the behaviors of various lolcows. My favorite ones are Chris-chan, Tim Buckley, and Vade.

Does anyone else have an interest in lolcows like I do?

Sounds cruel.
A way to feel superior.
You are kinda right. There is a well known phenomenon in lolcow communities known as the "A-log", a termed coined after Anthony "A-Log" Logatto. People who are "A-logs" are exactly how describe, people who feel insecure about their flaws and try take them out on lolcows.
But I assure you, this is very uncommon and most people are called out for this behavior.

Most people who read up on lolcows are mere benign witnesses to that lolcow's self destructive behavior.

There is a French movie about this " Le diner de con "( people of the higher circle of the society invite someone from the lower class that is a bit weird and pretend they want to know more about his passion but instead they just make fun of him, but ofc it goes the other way around during the movie) , and I personally think that people that are mean to or openly making fun of others that are a little bit weird are disgusting, I've always hated that.

Now sometimes you see some post on 9gag or other website making fun of people stupid "ACTIONS" ( not who they are but what they do ) and sometimes it's informative or funny I admit, but I won't shame them anyway.

Edit : And Its even worst nowadays because I think it is related to the issue of cyberbullying.

I checked out lolcows and quickly found a forum where people were coming up with ideas for playing practical jokes to play on a person in order to make them uncomfortable or upset. I guess the fun part is to imagine the person being upset?
Anyway, I don’t get it and it was a little sickening really.

Lolcow, a portmanteau of the acronym LOL and cow, is a derogatory slang term used to describe an individual who is deemed highly exploitable, and therefore susceptible to online trolling and flaming, due to his or her display of gullible behavior online.

Aye, for the most part it is exactly that. It's not a positive thing at all. And generally there's always those that say things like "but it's not like I'm DOING any of that" but the simple fact is, these sites live and die based on their visitor count. Merely going there at all supports the whole thing, and the "whole thing" is basically just yet another form of bullying. In fact, it might be one of the worst forms of it. Normal bullying just directly targets someone. But THIS sort of thing not only does that, but spreads it all over the place so that even more jerks can get in on the action.

There's one Youtuber I follow who occaisionally does these documentary videos about various things on the internet that are well known, so that people can learn what those things are really about. He did one of these videos about Chris-chan. It was quite long, about an hour, as there was a lot for him to talk about. Well done video, it was an unbiased look at the whole situation, with no stupid jokes or anything.

And what it showed is basically that this guy's life is in shambles at this point. I doubt I need to point to the source of the damage. Don't get me wrong, Chris is partly to blame for some of the stuff, but by far the vast majority of the damage done to him and his family was due to this whole "lolcow" idea.

People always underestimate what bullying does to someone. But they also have this idea that if they're only watching and laughing from the sidelines, they're not REALLY hurting anyone, right? Yeah, no. That's not how it works. That guy's situation, as well as MANY others, occur because hordes of people think in that very same way, thus fueling the truly nasty ones that want all the attention, keeping them going ever further.

I would very strongly advise anyone to stay far away from those sites. No good comes of it. If you want humor or drama, go elsewhere.

And to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if those sites were a source of malware. The ones that run those are NOT good people, nor would they be concerned with quality and such.

I did a quick google and the content I found was generally pretty sickening. Lolcows seems like a rather nasty example of cyber bullying which I have nothing but contempt for.

If I were you I would have a long hard think about whether this interest is compatible with the sort of person you want to be.

Aye.

And I'd like to add one thing though: An interest in drama and internet events isn't a bad thing. There's all sorts of interesting situations that can develop, lots of crazy stuff that ISNT from the lolcow sorts of things. Lots of stories to learn about. And they get pretty nuts. Like the "Final Fantasy house" thing, or all the lunacy that surrounded a Youtuber named "LeafyIsHere". I watched some stuff about those, and boy do those stories get loopy. But those aren't about bullying or anything like that, and don't come from those sorts of sites.

But yeah, there's much more healthy/positive/whatever ways of fulfilling this sort of interest. Lolcows and Encyclopedia Dramatica aint that.

No. There's a certain website which I won't mention here specifically dedicated to just that. I checked it out to see what the buzz was about, but I got disgusted pretty quickly. The lengths some of these people will go to to document and harass so-called "lolcows", combined with their overall behavior, makes me wonder how many of them have something to hide.

I'm not saying that simply knowing about "lolcows" is itself malicious. So you've heard of some of these people by now and maybe had a few thoughts or opinions of your own like the next person, but actively engaging them with some sort of malicious intent? If you're participating in that sort of thing (and I'm not saying you are here), you really should consider finding another way to kill time.

I don't engage.

i like to just observe them and i feel no guilt in doing so, especially if its the kind of lolcow that does benefit from having an audience

i understand why people in this thread are repulsed by the idea but following lolcows don't necessarily imply maliciousness or doing actions that may hurt them, in fact in many communities these things are looked down upon

one thing is making DSP stream montages that showcase his never ending ipocrisy, to say one, the other is actively trying to ruin a guy's life like its happening to Wings of Redeption the moment he is starting to get it together, let's not confuse documentation with sabotating
