i loose things all of the time, i don't know why. i will have something in my hand one second i will put it down then have no idea where it is. it happens to me all the time and i feel so stupid. it makes me mad that i can find it. when i do it is usually after looking for like 30 minutes and i find them in the stupidest places. once i put markers in a food cabinet, and i could not remember why. agh it makes me so mad, and i want to cry. i don't know how to make it any better. i hate having to ask others to help me find things that i lost because i can find them. i want to yell and cry and stomp my feet like a little kid and hit my head against the . i just don't know what to do. it is so frustrating and every one around me thinks it is funny that i loose things and can't find them.

i also have a problem with short term memory but it is so annoying just tonight i wanted to play my DS and i knew where it was but i put it down in a different place to find the charger and then i couldn't find it :(. my big problem is that when i decided to do something i have to do it even if i don't want to anymore, and i feel just horrible when i can't, and it always seems i loose things more often after i decide to do something with them( if that makes any sense. so it is even more annoying. and it puts me in a awful mood

most of the time when i loose my glasses is that they fell of my face, or someone knocked them off of where i had put them, it is no fun at all, because i can't see a foot in front of my face without my glasses.

and thank you for responding i was in a horrible mood and it helped to know that someone else has the same problems as me.

Layla,

You never said anything about this. But it does make sense. It happens to me also if I get distracted with doing multiple things or talking to someone else while I am doing another task. I iwll lose or forget whatever was being done or said before. Then sometimes later I iwll get it back, or other times it's completely lost. I have been fined for losing books, my keys were gone a bunch of times, I'v also gotten lost getting to the same classes I went to so many times before, yet I still got lost. You can't relly change it, but maybe just trying to take your time more in things and not putting as much pressure on yourself will help :)

p.s. If someone keeps laughing at you for somehting like this that you have no control over, they aren't a very nice person. I used to get so upset over losing things and then people trying to say that I simply was careless or making fun of me for doing this when if they had this problem they wouldn't find it quite so funny. I've been fined close to $100 just in lost books alone. And lost my wallet twice too with a good amount of money in it one of the times. So it can get costly too. But I find the less distractions i have while doing things or holding things, the less chance I will put it down for no reason or lose it. Kind of like with driving how I had to change the whole way I drive now because I was in a bunch of accidents in the beginning. Everything seems to be like a compensation for one problem or another... I wonder how many others here go through these things too. But I hope that helps a little.

Here's a little book anyone who frequently loses things might find useful (you can download it for free in PDF form at this site):

This is kind of a short version of the advice given in the book:

i looked at the principles one and it doesn't seem to cover what happens to me. i put things in places that are not normal, and i can never remember where i put them,i have to have one of my sisters look for me if i'm ever going to find it. i put things in like my dresser and food cabinets and places like that that have nothing to do with the object and you wouldn't even think of looking for that object there.

I think this is very common thanks to the poor "working memory" that many aspies have.

Think of the stereotypical "absent minded professor".

If I am watching TV and someone walks in during a commercial break and asks me what I am watching, most of the time I can't remember. Then when the show starts up again I can remember the entire show/movie up to that point almost word for word. Not exactly losing things, but an example of the dysfunctional working memory that I have.

thats sounds familar to things i do sometimes. after i have put a book down that i'm reading and someone asks me what it is about i won't be able to tellthem very well, but as soon as i pick up the book i know what is is about exactly

Basically what you are saying Layla is what I thought all along. And that is as soon as people get thrown into the equation (especially those we feel uncomfortable around or do not trust) , our brains get out of kilter and can actually lose what we just had a few seconds ago. Only to find it again when the 'distraction' goes away :)

a little bit. i don't forget everything it is just really hard to get it back and i get it back kind of out of order, but once i get going it is not so bad it is just trying to remember everything at first

Layla have you tried just focusing completely on the task and just ignoring the other person completely while you do it. So if they say something, you don't respond. I have a hard time tuning anyone/anything out but I find at least I don't 'lose' as much if I just focus 500% on the task and nnothing else. It is somehting I have to do anywya because of the learning problems. I have to focus completely on each thing anyway or the whole thing will be a completely bad outcome. I just try to take things as slowly as possible. When you find something that works for you you will feel more fulfilled and confident in things and that helps.

I sometimes misplace things to the point where I actually lose things.

I've apparently recently lost my keys which is not good at all and I haven't seemed to have the time to have them cut which is really bad.
I already don't like the feeling of having to stay outside in the freezing cold at all. :(

I would highly recommend sticking one of these to a wall and hanging your keys from them if you don't want to lose them. I started doing that about two years ago, and I haven't lost my keys since.

yeah keys are one of the things that are very bad to loose, like a cell phone, i once lost mine for a week and ended up finding it in my shoe in the closit, not good.
