Lose weight

Are there any other folks out there that need to lose weight? I've struggled with this all my life and I'm beginning to wonder if this may be a comorbidity to depression.

Well, today is day one and this morning, meal one. I'm going high protein and around 2,000 calories. Let's see if this has an impact.

Depression, stress, and medication are mean little beasts that contribute to weight woes. I'd recommend some light exercise as well to help you burn through stored calories. And carefully monitor your extra protein you're taking in just in case those meats also have high fat.

Yes I struggle as well. I even exercise and still have issues.

Best of luck to you. Don't give up!

I have struggled with my weight much of my life too. However about 7 years ago I bought home exercise equipment and now go regularly to the gym. I have lost nearly 2 and a half stone (31 lbs) and am around the correct weight for my height.

So with perseverance it can be done, a lot of exercise can be done cheaply as well, planks, situps and even walking say 30 minutes a few times a week helps.

Good Luck

Since early 2005, I've lost 82 pounds. And I've been taking Seroquel (in some form) the entire time.

I started by ridding my diet of sugar. That took off 40 pounds almost instantly. Seriously, that was in about a month.

After that? Everything in moderation.

Good luck with your program.
I did need to lose weight, and my plan was to keep eating whatever I wanted, stop drinking pop, and start running.
I started running, and it did work. I lost at least 25 lbs. I would still be running, but I have some tendon spurs, and anterior / lateral compartment syndrome, so I'm going to need a few surgeries to fix that.
So now I'm still eating whatever I want, and I've gained about 35 lbs since stopping running, or about 12 lbs per year.
If you are capable of running, I would recommend it to help with your weight loss.

I've been the fat kid in large skinny family my whole life. Even as a toddler, I was known as 'Thunder Thighs'. At my worst, I was about 45% fat. One day, when my depression was eating away at me, I got fed up with it and decided that on Jan 1st, I was going to start a new diet. I've been on the Keto Diet (low carb, moderate protein, high fat) for almost 9 months and had very good success. I lost 5 inches on my waist and have gained a decent amount of muscle, which puts me at a total of 15 pounds lost and maybe around 20% fat.

During the last 9 months, I've started to take long walks every day with my dog. I've also tried Couch-to-5k, which I failed due to using street shoes and got shin splints. Next week, I'm going to be at school, where there is weight room and great hiking trails. I also found THE running shoes I really wanted at Goodwill and in my size. So, next week I'll be giving C25k another go and also I'm going to try Stronglifts 5x5 (a weight lifting program) a try. It's going to be painful, but I won't be able to be on the Keto Diet, so I'll have to make it work.

The Keto Diet works by using fat as a source of fuel, opposed to carbs. Fat happens to be really filling and slow to digest, so over the course of the day, you're eating less calories than you'd usually eat. You're hardly ever hungry. The key is to find and make low-carb substitutes of your favorite foods to avoid sugar temptation. It's easier not to dive in a pint of Ben and Jerry's if you have an ice cream bar with 3g of carbs to tide you over (put it in a bowl and add crushed salted peanuts to it to add flavor and nutrients). Hankering for pancakes? There's a recipe for that too. Same with cakes, "mac" & cheese, mashed "potatoes", etc.

I'd recommend it to anyone. It's not a cure all, because you still have to count calories, like with all diets, but it's not a diet you're going to hate. The most important thing about losing weight is finding something that works for you. If you hate it, you won't stick with it and in the end, it won't work.

Good luck with the weight loss, but be careful using somebody's old shoes for running. My son is an elite runner, and I've taken dozens of pairs of his old shoes to Goodwill. They don't look it, but they're already worn out. Either the previous owner already ran the shoes 500 miles, or if they are unused, they might have been sitting around too long and aren't as flexible as new shoes.
If you get into the running, go to a good running shoe store. They will help you select a good shoe based on your stride, the fit, and use. Not cheap though, probably in the $125 - $175 range.
I've had shin splints more than once when I was running, and I'd rather pay for a good pair of shoes than wait 6 months for the pain to go away.
Keep with it and it will be a short time before you advance to 10k and half marathon!

I'd love to get a brand new pair, but unfortunately, that's really out of my price range. They looked fairly new though. Looked like a pair of "failed New Years resolution" shoes and I've done the stride test years ago, so I know their for my foot type; neutral with slight underpronation.

I really can't wait to break them in. If I can do a 5k, I'll be ecstatic.

Weight is a constant struggle for me. I thought I had finally beaten it in 2012-2013. I used Sparkpeople and (literally) worked my ass off. I rode my bike a lot and did kickboxing and HIIT. I was a healthy weight. Then I went on Abilify. I gained 40 lbs in three months or so! It was terrible. Then I got injured, and I still haven't recovered even though it's been two years. I need physical therapy. ANYWAY, I still haven't lost the weight and I've put on another 10 or 15 lbs from being depressed and drinking too much for over a year (which obviously helped nothing).

Honestly, monitoring my food carefully and exercising a LOT is how I managed before. I have to find the motivation again. I also have to realize that due to certain limitations, I might not get back to my 2012 size.

Abilify and SSRIs are terrible. I'm so glad I got off of them. I take Rhodiola now and it has worked better than any SSRI I have ever taken and I havn't had any side effects except for slightly increased libido.
