High Point, NC - This is a story that will really touch your heart. It teaches you never to give up and to be thankful for every opportunity you have.
Tracey McCain found this inspiring young man living right here in our community. Javonta Riddick is 18, has Autism and wants to be a police officer. He's so passionate about it, High Point police couldn't turn him away. Now Javonta is a full-fledged volunteer and has he puts it, he's living the dream.
"Javonta showed up in our police lobby probably back at the end of July and he said he wanted to be a volunteer, and that he had been a volunteer with the Chesapeake Virginia police department," said Captain Cherie Maness. "He is such a joy to have around, he is just friendly. He always has a smile on his face. He gives such an uplifting environment here at the police department," said Maness.
"I type reports, and put it on file, and they will know who ran it. And I help Captain Cherie out with anything she needs me to do," said Javonta when asked about his responsibilities at the department.
"Javonta needs no motivation, matter of fact he motivates us. He motivates everybody he comes in contact with," said High Point Police Chief Marty Sumner. "If you have gotten into a job and it has gotten boring for you there is a spark right here. When he comes around you, you are excited, everything is so new and fresh to him, that has to rub off on to you," said Sumner.
Javonta says one day he wants to be like one of the officers he works with daily, Lieutenant Carter. "He gets the bad guys all the time with me, and goes to get the warrants," said Javonta.
The most important part, Javonta knows he's special. "I love it, I love it God made me special," he said at the end of the interview with a huge smile.
Javonta loves being a volunteer. He would like to become an officer one day, but his Autism will keep him from driving and carrying a gun. But the High Point Police Department issued Javonta his very own flash light; which he wears on his belt.
