A Bowling Green man is charged with endangering the welfare of his autistic grandson after police say he decided to leave the boy inside an unlocked vehicle in the Kroger parking lot Monday morning because he didn’t want the child to make a scene inside the store.
Shane Sutton
Bowling Green police were called to the 350 U.S. 31-W By-Pass store at 10:10 a.m. Monday where they located a white Honda Pilot idling in the parking lot near the gas pump area, according to police records. Police saw a young child secured in a child safety seat in the middle seat position. Two windows were left completely down. The temperature at the time was 70 degrees and windy.
At 10:18 a.m. police went inside the store to find the vehicle owner, Shane Sutton, 54, 815 Wilkerson Trace #131, according to Sutton’s arrest citation. At 10:20 police and Sutton exited the store and Sutton said he had his grandson because the boy had a mild fever and did not go to preschool that day.
Sutton said he works for a company that services Kroger and he stopped by the store to talk to someone about work, according to his arrest citation. He said he was only inside the store for 10 minutes and he didn’t take the boy with him because the child is autistic and Sutton didn’t want him to make a scene inside the store, according to his citation.
“Shane’s decision placed (the child) in a situation which created substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to” the child, according to his arrest citation.
Sutton’s wife was called to the store to pick up the child, according to the citation.
Sutton was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment and lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail. He posted a $7,500 bond and was released from custody Tuesday.
During his arraignment Tuesday, he waived his right to a preliminary hearing, Warren Circuit Court records show. The case will now be heard by an upcoming Warren County grand jury.
