Man with Asperger’s Syndrome is attacked by yob with metal pole for ‘looking at him funny’

A YOB used a METAL POLE to attack a man with Asperger’s Syndrome because he “looked at someone funny”.

The thug then followed victim Jason Robinson home and continued to torment him.

Jason, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, bipolar disorder and epilepsy, needed five stitches in his ear after being battered outside a cafe in Leeds.

The 27-year-old said his attacker told him he had “looked at someone funny”.

Jason’s family claim the attacker later visited their home with a larger gang and threatened him again.

The assault left Jason with heavy bruising to his back and a blooded ear.

He said: “I don’t know why they would pick on me. I’ve not done anything to them.

“I was sat down having a sandwich and this lad came towards me with a metal pole, like he’s snapped part of a child’s scooter off.

“He was staring at me and asking why I’d looked at him funny. I said I hadn’t meant to, that’s just how I look. I look at everyone a bit funny.”

Jason continued: “I didn’t want any sort of fight because there were people around and I’m not that sort of person. I was keeping myself to myself.

“Even if I had looked at him, that’s still no reason to attack someone. I wasn’t doing anyone any harm.

“This guy came towards me on a scooter and I thought he was going to run me over. He got off the bike with a pole and used it to attack me.

“He was waving it around like a madman but I was just trying to protect the people around me. I was trying to think of the best way to take it off him.

“I chucked my hoodie at him but he kept swinging it around at me. I tried to grab it but he kept hitting me on the ear with it.

“I was telling him to stop but he wouldn’t.”

West Yorkshire Police have yet to make any arrests.

Jason’s mum Heather Carr said the attack, which happened at 11am on Monday, has left the family distraught.

She said: “Jason wouldn’t hurt a fly. He was just minding his own business and he’s been attacked for no reason.

“Of course you can’t see Jason’s disabilities, but it shouldn’t matter. These lads came to the door and it was terrifying.

“They said he looked them funny but he always says ‘Mum, I look at everyone funny’. That’s just his nature.”

Hundreds of people shared a Facebook post by Jason’s sister, 32-year-old Sammi, who appealed for witnesses to the attack.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We are investigating an assault on a 27-year-old man in Broadway, Hawksworth, which happened shortly after 11am on Monday September 9.

“The victim was attacked by a suspect armed with a metal pole and received a cut to his ear and bruising to his back.

“The suspect left the scene on a motor scooter. The victim was treated at hospital and released later the same day.

“The incident is being investigated as assault occasioning actual bodily harm and enquiries are ongoing.”

On three separate occasions as a teenager, I had girls wanting to beat me up, because, as they put it, I was 'giving them evils'. Fortunately, nothing serious came of it. But when people react so disproportionately to anothers actions, it's scary.

It's this sort of thing that make me anxious and feel like I need to hold back in terms of expressing thoughts, feelings and humour, because if there is a way of 'looking at someone' that can result in being physically attacked, then the feat of trying to select the appropriate tone and gestures for verbal communication, without offending someone, seems nigh on impossible!

The most disturbing thing is that these subhumans followed him home and threatened the family. Should such folk follow me home and actually enter, they may not walk out, or breathe again for that matter. I will not hesitate to defend my family.

I received a dislocated jaw from two men for the same reason. I was out for a walk and these two men were sitting on porch of their house when I walked by they started yelling insults and profanity at me. I ignored them and kept walking. I walked about two or three blocks and I did not see them so I thought they where just having a bit of fun at my expense when suddenly they came at me on a dirt bike and stopped in front of me and started pushing me claiming I had disrespected them. Then they started hitting me, and kicking me. I rolled into a ball and tried to protect my head and tender bits, but somehow the kicks got through.
They eventually got tired and left. I had several bruises and other abrasions, as well as a dislocated jaw. The doctor patched me up, but my jaw has never been the same. It sometimes hurts or will lock in place. The worst part was the feeling of injustice and humiliation.

It's things like this that make me glad to be single, for I know I am not physically capable of defending a family :(

Stuff like this makes me so angry, just because I wish I could have been there to protect him. Little baby gangster would get that scooter shoved up his ass sideways.
