'1909 10HP Blackstone oil engine was used for pumping water from a river to a market garden. The engine was sabotaged in the 1920s by someone blowing up the cylinder with explosives. A new cylinder was installed and the engine was returned to service for a number of years when it eventually fell into disuse. A number of river floodings submerged the engine and it was eventually partially buried in silt. It was recovered in the 1990s and in 1997 it was dismantled, cleaned and started again after many years of neglect. The starting procedure requires heating of the hot bulb with a blow lamp in order to vaporise the fuel ( kerosene ) and to preheat the internal combustion chamber to allow fuel ignition.'

Musical fuel injectors...

'47772 started for the first time in some time. this engine has EP start contactors which is why it stop motoring over after a couple of turns as the air had got too low. it was a bit sluggish to start with but it soon clears and settles down nicely with oil pressure of 60 PSI. still plenty more work to be done on this one before it graces the main line again. But it should not be too long away'

Quality of the film not helped by youtube!

Further information related to the man who filmed this;

Ivo Peters - Wikipedia

What this article doesn't really go into is that Ivo did something hardly anyone else did; he went around filming and photographing industrial railways. His films are often the only evidence they existed because the physical traces have been eradicated by later development.

Some with be aware of lathes which are used mostly for making round parts though many CNC (Computer Numeric Control) have an additional machining head to make flats or put holes in components. Before computers if you wanted ornate components or turned oval parts you would use a machine called a Rose Engine. Though the videos are not of it a late family friend actually made one and we have several small oval boxes made on that machine.

A Rose Engine in action

And a simple version cutting threads and engraving the lid of a small wooden box

A video on the history of these fiendishly complex machines

A video found after originally posting of an ornamental lathe 'showing off'!

This is one I actually have somewhere on VHS. This is steam in New Zealand but contains two interesting segments. One is called KB Country (starts at around 4:10) and the other is Ride of 480 (intro starts at 24:30). KB Country, though black and white, is incredibly atmospheric while Ride of 480 is optimistic and shows very little about the true effort it takes to transform a derelict hulk into a working machine again.
