Harrison Cole, from Cramlington, has been called rude, naughty and a trouble maker by strangers unaware he has autism.

A video made by a 10-year-old boy to tackle the prejudice against autistic children has gone viral.

Harrison Cole, who has autism, uses flashcards to reveal the harrowing abuse he has received from strangers.

He says he has been called rude, naughty and a trouble maker - all because people don’t understand his condition.

Now the video starring Harrison - dubbed Mr Autastic - has gone viral after being shared more than 50,000 times online.

Mum Lesley Cole, 39, said: “Some of the things people have said to me and Harrison have been horrendous.

“One woman said to me that he needed a good smack, which was really hurtful because they don’t understand he has autism.

“They are really judgemental and don’t realise he is just a child - it is not his fault.”

Harrison was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) aged seven, and autism a year later.

It means he finds it hard to express his emotions, is unable to focus and is sensitive to noise and crowds.

The footage shows Harrison telling the camera he was left upset after being called silly and a trouble maker by strangers.

One of his flashcard reads: “I won’t grow out of autism or ADHD. With the right support I may learn to cope with my disability so society accepts me.”

Mrs Cole posted the video on Facebook and it has now gone viral after being shared in countries such as Australia and America.

She said: “We can’t believe the reaction and Harrison asks all the time how many people have seen it.

“Lots of people have private messaged me saying how proud they are of Harrison and he has done really well.

“We decided to call Harrison Mr Autastic, a mix between autism and fantastic, and he thinks the video is amazing.”

The video also promotes Mrs Cole’s charity Autism Northumberland, which she set-up in October 2014.

It was launched after her youngest son, five-year-old Beau, was also diagnosed with autism.

Mrs Cole said: “There was no support anywhere in Northumberland and we didn’t want other parents going through it alone.

“We set-up the charity and it has more than 400 members offering support to other families.

“Harrison now has got friends and he doesn’t have to be different. It has made such a big difference.”
