metal bump limiting access to rent a car lots

You know how some rental car places (usually in the city) have those metal grates at the entrance where you can actually drive over them to enter, but you can't exit through them because it will puncture your car?
(There is a separate place to drive out.)

How are those metal bumps made so that they only allow entry?

They are mounted at a angle and spring loaded. When you drive over them in the right direction, you push them down. The springs cause them to pop back up. When you try to drive over them in the wrong direction, your forward momentum pushes the sharp points back into their stops and into your tires.

I was involved in a project manufacturing portable stop strips that were remotely activated by law enforcement. They worked on the same principle, but were electrically actuated so the good guys could drive over them, but the perpetrators got stopped.

It is a good thing too. Otherwise it would be one of those places that you go in and never come out.
