My wife wants one. I'm 6'2", so I'm worried about constantly hitting my head. I might consider living in one if it were a cabin deep in the woods.

It's a strange market. Who knows? Maybe there are those who will build to spec. In whole or in part as well.

I don't fancy having one in the city because I can't imagine the sound insulation being particularly good and the other buildings would tower over it, also I need space, but I would rather like to have one as a retreat in the forest up in the mountains.

It is my goal to own a tiny/minimalist home. I was actually thinking about just building a garage with a loft above it, so I have a garage but I can still live in a small space.

It can be accomplished for 25k in materials, but then there's the cost of the land, well/septic, and so much more that push such a thing into the price range of existing starter homes.

I loved the tiny house built by two set decorators featured in tiny house nation, it expanded at the sides and it wasn't cramped ,so you could stand up when you are on the inside .I didn't like the colour on the outside ,there was a small space for their pet rabbit but that give me claustrophobia.

Yes there are many builders who will custom build one of these. The biggest issue I would see is if more than 1 person is going to live there, how would you ever be able to get alone space? For 1 person though, maybe ideal.

Is there a way we can agree to make the people smaller?

Not in a day, but the new ones, over a generation or two...

Micro homes to mansions in three generations...

I liked fantastic voyage, i had money down on you posting 'in the land of the giants' :)

I have "Fantastic Voyage" on DVD. Small world! :p

"Land of the Giants" didn't make anyone smaller though. It was just a world that was bigger than ours to begin with. And technologically inferior to our own. ;)

Wish I had that series on DVD as well though. Small is good.

Fascinating concept, although the insurance and zoning considerations appear to be somewhat complex for such a new market.

Would you ever consider living in such a home? Cost versus space...and the need not to have much personal property! An interesting way to be off or barely on "the grid" I suppose.

"Tailor-made" for Aspies? Hmmmm./QUOTE]

i did consider it recently (and seriously) but it came down to cost of living for me. no family so no free land, and "off the grid" isn't what many would like to believe. did go minimalist though and no regrets. down to 500 sf from much more a few years back. threw much away to get there, but it was just stuff.

point is that if cost matters then look at total and not just initial. if you want to travel then maybe an RV instead. if you don't then a small apartment in a safe area with predictable utility costs may be better, especially for an aspie that doesn't want the job of variable neighbor motive management.

just my two pesos.

YES! I have been seeking tiny homes for a long time. Trouble is, they cost as much as a regular home! I thought it would help solve the homeless problem, but it's now this quaint, kitsch-ey little thing that people in their 30's with degrees from like Duke University and a belly full of Wholefoods like to do.

Mind you, I would love to be a person in my 30's with degrees from Duke University and a belly full of Wholefoods.......

Don't ask me. Last summer DH & I doubled our apartment space and it worked great! But that was because he does space grabbing activities like painting and making our cat products. And I discovered I couldn't write while being chased from room to room by DH's chronic illness needs.

When I got my own "room to write in" my writer's block disappeared. And that's key. Were I single, they would be appealing, but then there's the cats; I have a lively guy who needs cat trees and the two younger ones chase themselves up and down three flights of stairs.

As long as it's in an area where you can get a decent fibre optical broadband connection and it's quiet it would work for me, I barely leave my computer desk anyway when at home, apart from to go to the bathroom or to get food. I'd however also have to consider my cat, if it's quiet and there's plenty of safe space around for her to roam about outside without it being too close to main roads then that part's reasonable, but in the cold Winter months when she stays in a lot more I'm not sure she'd be as happy in such a confined space.

Interesting to see what objects can be so readily made into a sturdy home!

I suppose with the proper insulation and plumbing/electrical fixtures anything is possible. It just seems sad that so many people are forced to rent (or go homeless) when this may be a viable option.

5 shipping container homes you can order right now
Nice idea, but unless you're well off you'd still need a loan and I think you'd struggle to get a secured loan / mortgage on that. There are of course permanent caravans which are effectively a similar thing that have existed for many years, some can be even cheaper.
