Mom becomes a super sleuth by using a GPS device to track down her daughter after she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted
The woman, who has not been identified, faced every parents' worst nightmare after her daughter was kidnapped when she went for a walk near their Rowlett, Texas, home on Monday.
But she quickly swung into action to trace the girl, who has Asperger's syndrome, and wears a special GPS device to help her parents locate her.
After the daughter left the house the device, which sends location information to the mom's cell phone sent her a text saying 'location unknown.'
According to The Dallas Morning News the mom saw that her daughter appeared to be in an unusual location.
And when she contacted the GPS device -which has a microphone on it - she was horrified to hear sounds of a struggle in the background.
'I heard the assault while it was happening. I knew exactly what was happening. I was terrified,' the mother told CBS.
She jumped in the car and tracked her daughter down.
She initially saw that the GPS device showed that her daughter was in Springfield Park in the 5500 block of Antioch Drive, so she quickly drove there. But did not see her.
Then, after looking at the GPS location information again, she saw that her daughter was at the intersection of Hickox and Rowlett Road, but when she drove there she did not find her.
Panicking, she made her way down an alley near the family's home where she found her daughter frantically running.
Police believe the suspect lured the girl into his vehicle, drove her to the park where he sexually assaulted her and then fled.
By the time the mom found her, the suspect was not around and had fled after he saw the device and feared he'd be traced.
'I don't know how you can do something like that to a child, to any child and especially one who has … a disability. It's disgusting,' the girl's mother told KXAS-TV.
'I think this device saved her life, or from being gang raped, because it was going to go to that. That's what [I heard the suspect say],' said the mom.
The attacker is described as a white man with a mustache and a tattoo of a circle with points on it. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue or black shorts and Nike sandals.
The car was white and 'smelled of cigarettes and had two car seats and a booster seat in it.'
Lieutenant David Nabors said the GPS information the mom got has given them a clear lead.
The information was saved to the mom’s cell phone and shows that the suspect took her daughter to the parking lot in the park between 4:10 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday afternoon.
The family only began using the life-saving device, called Angel Sense, a month ago.
The device uses GPS and is attached to clothing with a powerful magnet that only the parent can remove, CBS reports.
