Mom of 6 Year Old Boy who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum/Aspberger's

Hello,
My name is Suzanne. I have a baby boy who was "diagnosed" with AS-Asp. It is through the school district and so far I have heard the this is not a reliable source. So we are on the waiting list for the Fraser institute here in Minnesota (USA). A cousin of mine who has an Autistic son has informed me that he is really just ADHD. So I am confused and trying to gather as much resources and connections as I can. I got wind of this site via a work colleague who has Aspberger's. I apologize if it sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about and if I inadvertently offend someone. I am new to all of this and am learning as I go. I just want to be the best parent I can be for my son. :)

Hey welcome!!!! I am sooo glad you joined. We are here to help and be supportive. You are the best for your son. Its nice to see you here. Welcome sweetie. I'll see you at work :) Actually just and fyi alot of Aspies are diagnosed with ADHD or disorders like OCD.

Hi Suzanne,
Wow, your son is a lucky boy to have a mom like you. Let's start by establishing that having Aspergers is not a bad thing. It is being an orange marble in a bowl of green ones. Different is a great thing, for it is the desire to be different that has driven many to start new civilizations, like that which we have here in America. It is what drove Da Vinci and Einstein, Tesla and newton. Great people that knew there was more, when all else said otherwise.
It is curious to me that anyone could diagnose or teach about Aspergers without having it, especially at such a young age. But I think it is important to note that their is enough of a difference in him, that people noticed. So, He is different. Let's call it Aspergers or lets call it skipping table. It does not matter. What matters is that we are able to help him to understand the differences he has, and how to be successful with them.
Most Importantly, He needs to be accepted by SOMEONE for who he is. It is important to know that we are alright, and although more are nice, one is vital.
I feel that things are going to be OK. I would even like to meet your son. I would be very interested in observing him. Partly out of sheer curiosity, and partly out of wanting to learn more about others with Autism. I have been working to start a support group in my area. Since I found out I have it, I felt it necessary to provide a safe environment where people like us could come together to share and learn, and to know that we are not alone. Also a place where those who live with us can come to understand and appreciate how we see the world. I am glad you joined and I think you will find this a healthy and helpful place to be.
One last word. The so called "Professionals" are not all knowing. In fact, they call their profession "A Practice". It is for a reason (Trust Me). So take what they give you as a tool, not a sentence. You will know better than anybody. Follow your heart and you will be the best you can for him.
Peace

I recommend making an appointment with the autism society of Minnesota in St. Paul. Try to get an evaluation from Barbara Luskin; she is top shelf. The Fraser Institute did not correctly diagnose my son.

Just thought of a couple of places other than frasier you might want to try. I got the feeling from them when I called them to let them know I already had my dx and didn't need to try to be on the wait list they were snobbish. But these two places are pretty good too.

Minnesota Autism Center

Welcome to the Holland Center - Holland Center

AUSM - Autism Society of Minnesota - AUSM - Autism Society of Minnesota

Or I recommend where I went too which was psych recovery. Its a great place and the guy i saw wasn't as good for me cause I was girl but he works with boys a lot. So you might want that. Good luck hun let me know if you try any of them.

Thank you so much! I definitely have a great start now and will be on track when my little guy comes back this fall;)
