A mum of four autistic children is set to stand for election in the wake of Stormont falling .

Roisin McMackin said she was sick of the lack of action taken by those she voted for and wanted to stand to make a real difference.

The mum, from Beragh in Co Tyrone , will stand as an independent for West Tyrone and said waiting lists and the autism strategy would be high on her priority list.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Roisin said: "I would have been very involved in several disability groups over the years for parents looking for advice and I would have encouraged parents to vote in the last elections for these people who promised they would do certain things for parents.

"They said they would make changes and they were going to fight for parents but whenever they got elected I found they did not want to do anything for anyone.

"I was blocked from one MLA's Facebook page after getting him votes. It just goes to show a lot of MLAs are in it for themselves, they will tell parents one thing but they do not do anything with it.

"I was so shocked by this and I thought with another election coming up, why not stand? There's a few of us thinking the same and will be standing but not for a party and we have key things we want to focus on.

"I want to help the general public and make things better, getting these cancer drugs, cutting waiting lists and sorting out A&E queues."

Roisin has four daughters with husband Brendan, all of whom have learning difficulties and she is determined to fight for her children’s right to have specialist services and education.

Eldest Molly Rose, 10, has autism and dyspraxia; Mary-Ann, eight, has autism and a growth hormone deficiency; six-year-old Maisy has severe autism, is doubly incontinent and non-verbal; and youngest Kesha, three, also has autism and a growth hormone deficiency.

"I am going to be telling people to vote for me because I will tackle waiting lists, the failed autism strategy, education provision and the postcode lottery in drugs, for cancer or whatever," said Roisin.

"I will hold the Trust to account and have meetings and work with people to make things happen.

"My speciality would be autism and if we brought some of the English laws in over here we could streamline the services but we would have to implement some of the English Acts.

"I have had to fight to get my children what they need. I want to make a change myself, the politicians are too busy blaming each other to do any good."

i think she is awesome,id vote for her.
she also needs to look at adult autism and the services desperately needed in ireland as her girls will grow up,what will she do then?!!
ireland is in dire ned of everything from social clubs to social training to SALT and SIT and supported living, plus employment support to,ireland really sucks for all that i have many cousins and an uncle with autism in various parts of ireland and they get no support and have had to really fight to keep their DLA,the situation is awful there,my two tallaght [dublin] HFA cousins have to go to a employment service for people with learning difficulties rather than a service for people with ASD,so it isnt even tailored for them and their skillset.
