Laura Bamforth and her son Jack.

A mum whose four-year-old son was diagnosed with autism has organised a fundraising evening to raise awareness of the condition.

Laura Bamforth, of Pontefract, wants people to have a better understanding of autism after hurtful remarks were made towards her son Jack.

The mum-of-two has organised a psychic fundraising event to raise money for the National Autistic Society, which has helped the family come to terms with Jack’s diagnosis.

Mrs Bamforth, who is also mum to one-year-old Jessie, said: “The diagnosis left me questioning if it was my own fault although it was nice to have some answers.

“Since Jack has been diagnosed, we have had some very rude and nasty comments towards him and we think that is due to a lack of knowledge.”

The psychic event will take place at Halfpenny Lane Working Men’s Club, Pontefract, from 1pm until 3.30pm on Sunday April 3.

There will be free psychic readings and a raffle at the fundraiser.

Mrs Bamforth said: “I am organising the event with my psychic friend Angela Gale.

“She has offered to help me by giving free readings at the event and is bringing along one or two of her psychic friends.

“She is so kind helping me out.”

Tickets for the event cost £10 and include food. To book a place contact Laura on 07702 248472 or e-mail [email protected]

Raffle prizes include tickets to see Steven medium Holbrook and a free psychic reading with Angela Gale. Also up for grabs will be a beauty treatment and a free photo shoot and prints with Lavern Washington Photography.

"...psychic fundraising event"? Psychic? I'm a bit worried about this. Sure, people need to understand what we have to go though in life and the annoying things we have to put up with from others, but what I would have in mind would be something a little more respectable, and less open to accusations of quackery. Besides, 'awareness-raising' is something that most now associate with Autism Speaks, and they're not exactly popular at the moment with those they claim to speak for.

Well, if you're trying to raise money there are fewer ways to do it in a short amount of time. A psychic night tends to be a fun event that people gladly pay money for. And if you think it's open to accusations of quackery, just stop on by my neck of the woods sometime and see how much money this rakes in from nearly all corners of the globe.

Semantics. The article says nothing about Autism Speaks. Does Autism Speaks even operate out of England? With only this article to go on, all I see here is a mother who is trying to be proactive in helping her son in a way that will hopefully also benefit others.

The problem is the emphasis on "awareness." No one cares a lick for kindness or understanding. It's all about "awareness." To clarify whether "awareness" is a concrete improvement, you'll notice that Jerry Falwell is very much "aware" of the existence of gay people. Some help that is.

Some help that is.

Again, I point out the difference between intent and semantics.

People are making a big deal out of a word and assuming they know everything there is to know about this woman's intent. Which, unless you are her, or are personally involved with her in some way, you can't. And by personally involved, which are also words that I have used to describe a potential relationship with someone, I intend to imply that only someone who is either her friend, family member, or close next door neighbor could really know for certain that she's a sign waving cure fanatic.

I'm not pretending I know what her intent is. I don't care what her intent is. She wants to help. So what. She's not.

Also, I'd like to ask you not to talk to me like I'm an idiot.

I'm not talking to anyone like they are an idiot. My response is to everyone who is hung up on the semantics, I'm sorry if you took that personally.

And how do you know she isn't helping? Why are you so against what she's doing? So far all I've heard from anyone is criticism based on their own personal prejudices and not any actual evidence or personal experiences.
