Music communities

I've been trying to find some music community... Not sure why I'm doing it, but still, can't wait to hear how much people hate me, I guess :D but anyway, very long time ago there was this place called "garage band" (has nothing to do with Apple :) ) music artists would listen to each other, for every 3 or 5 hearing of other artist's song you'll get 1... I think, so basically people hear each others music and leave comments and ratings. The company has been gone for years, they changed their name and policy, but I'm wondering if there's another community like that out there. I probably won't have time for it anyway (I dont even have time for any vocal or guitar practice, what kind of musician am I? :) ) but stll, it would be nice to know if there's one.

I think there's a very big underground network where the good music is about. Many of the artists that inspire me are smallish, non mainstream affairs so, although they have a following, they seldom if ever get a chart hit or a platinum royalty status.
I know what you mean about time but I think it's O.K. to take time out of you have to and then practise when you get time again.
Absolutely take your point. I have no idea either whether what I'm writing at this time would be hated or loved.

Do you have any recordings/ videos to listen/ look at? I've actually found 2 communities, they look pretty nice. I'll see how it goes.
One of them is this one: ReverbNation and there're a few more, I'll fine the link later.

Oh hey! I make music! I've got a list of it on my website if you want to see (if it's actually accessible, since there are some datacentre problems at the time of this post). Alternatively, I also have it on my SoundCloud.

Really nice! My kids couldn't get enough of your music :) I couldn't get to your website though... How do you get other people listen to your music on sound cloud, is there some sort of a system, or it is just an audio sharing place? ... Yeah... I haven't checked it out yet :) and do you play some musical instrument?

Thanks! SoundCloud's just an audio sharing website, like YouTube but with audio instead of videos. I do play an instrument, I'm on Grade 6 of piano, bearing mind I started when I was 5 years old, and I'm 14 now. If you really want, I also have most of my songs (but not all of them) on my YouTube channel. And yeah my website's experiencing some difficulties at the moment. I hope they're fixed soon (it's some problem with my hosting service's datacentre - apparently it's rubbish).

That's awesome! I'll definitely check out your YouTube channel when I have some time. There've been quite a few pretty talented artists on AC but they don't seem to stick around for some reason. I think I should make a list of all the AC music artists YouTube channels and make a play list :) ( it's easier for me this way, even though I do know some might be on the Sound Cloud) I'm going to see if it works :) you're going to be 1st on the list I guess... Well, I guess I could also make an Autism related playlist. I know some people make videos about Autism,... So that's what I'm going to do then :) I'm only going to put videos on the list if people want to share and if the videos are not offensive

I suppose soundcloud is O.K. so long as you only put on stuff that will sound good but you wouild accept maybe it could be lifted. I mean, suppose you write a really good song, you put it on soundcloud, a pro comes along, lifts either the riffs or chord progression and possibly they may even market it as their own. I suppose this happens very rarely but it has been taking place in the music industry for some time. George Harrison fought a courtcase when he was accused of "lifting" the melody of My Sweet Lord from another song.
I've seen a few lively online debates about this actually. One camp believes it's petty to hold your music back and another camp believes if you do upload material that's quite good, anything could happen.
One guy who was in the know recommends making the most professional C.D. you can manage and then send the disk to a record label. This must be a label that specialises in whatever genre of music you are doing. So, you don't send a jazz fusion C.D. to a label that normally caters to heavy metal. The chances, of couse, are slim. Music is hugely competitive and a heck of a lot of people have software and experience to produce decent material (a bit like novel writing).
Still, what happens is the label will produce your music for free. Statistics state that platinum royalties are very rare and many musician wannabes only cover their studio production loan.
Probably the absolute best option is to simply form a band and get out there playing to an audience.

I don't know a great deal about soundcloud. I think there must be some copyright rules they have and it's one way to let the world know you're making music. What intrigues me, though, is how to make a real impact in the face of so much competition online. Is the internet now the main future of recording or is it easier to do live gigs (form a group)or even contact record labels.
When I do get more informed about soundcloud, I'll try and find out more about the net scene.
By the way, nice going and hope you keep making music.
