My 19 years in New Zealand

In this thread there is a simple motto if you want to move overseas-Research it before making any decisions

For those who know me,I have lived in New Zealand for 19 years and before that I lived in Hong Kong till 1994 and to this day I would still tell my parents the following-

"Why did you move to New Zealand, there is nothing much to do at night, the food is expensive and etc"

After living 19 years in New Zealand,I can simply say I had enough of living in it as during the weekends all I can do is get drunk and thats basically it

During this month,I travelled around Japan and have come to the conclusion that I would prefer Japan than New Zealand and my parents think its crazy but to myself its no crazy decision as I have found the Japanese to be friendly people and I would not also mind working in a Japanese company

OP: "In this thread there is a simple motto if you want to move overseas-Research it before making any decisions."

Sounds reasonable.
Are there people who have moved or will be moving from
one country to another who care to comment?

Have we found ourselves an extroverted Aspie? Many Aspies would like NZ for its lack of night life.
Of course, it depends what you are looking for! Compared to any Asian country, New Zealand streets are empty at night (At least compared to the tropical countries). But many who move to NZ do so for the lifestyle - partly because that's how its promoted. Maybe for your parents, owning a house is better than living in a tiny apartment on the 37th floor.
There is of course much more to do than the stereotypical getting drunk.
As for prices, imported goods are expensive due to freight costs. Other products, we have to pay export prices.
Living in Japan would be good. It is totally different from NZ - not good or bad, just different. But I doubt it would be cheaper!
As many here know, I've been living in a SE Asian country for the last eight years. I love it, but its not easy.
In any move, there will be pros and cons. It depends what is important to you.

I'll be moving to New Zealand next month :) As zurb said, NZ lack of night life appeals to me, although that's not why I'm moving there.

"Research it before making decisions" I 100% agree! Also if possible actually try living in the country for a good while before making the commitment to move permanently. Research is great but no amount of reading will actually match up to the reality of living in a different country with a different culture, possibly a long way from family and friends. Moving back to your original country is just as much hassle as emigrating in the first place!
