My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined

I just walked into one of my favorite restaurants and it looks completely different. The walls are repainted different colors, the floor went from concrete to wood tile, and the booth seats have been replaced. They replaced the sign outside as well.

It looks fine, but my brain is screaming “it’s DiFfErEnt! NoOoOo!” Funny how such a meaningless change can be so perturbing. Reminds me of the time I got upset because my grandmother got a new sofa.

In the restaurant business there is always lots of change, constantly... Just explore some more, maybe find a new place, or give the newly renovated place a chance, at least for a few visits...

One coffee shop I had enjoyed hanging out at didn't even last one year and was out of business, I do miss it... It certainly had a unique atmosphere...

Did the food and menu also change? I think that one can overcome the initial shock of a different decor and adjust to it, but if the menu and food are the same, that provides familiarity and you can adjust to it. If it's new management and those are also different, then it's a different restaurant.

That's how I feel every time Walmart periodically moves groceries around.

Where I loudly mutter, "Gee, I guess I'll have to go to Safeway where I can find what I need!"

I feel that way about Costco. They keep changing product locations. They don't put up signs identifying what's in each aisle, and there isn't even an app. Are they out of something, or has it moved to a different shelf? Even the staff don't really know. But it is the cheapest source around, so I spend the time to track things down.

Does anyone know the rationale for why grocery stores seem to regularly change the location of everything?

It's to get you to notice new products, because then you start walking around the store. There is a lot of research studying foot traffic patterns in stores. Restaurants can sometimes go about seven years, then they need to update them to hold on to their clientele. I just get really frustrated. And l shop way less now. Which is good for my bank account. Plus you can order online now.

Hah! Some of my favourite coffee shops (independent) haven't changed their layout in years, even back to the 1990's... And they are still very popular :)
