My Journey with Asperger's Syndrome

Hello everyone. I am new to contributing threads on this forum, or any forum in general. I am using apiescentral.com to connect with like minded individuals and relate about shared experiences. To begin, as soon as I started Kindergarten, I had felt different from my peers. When communicating, I had complications with detecting subtle nonverbal queues when people wanted to stop or commence conversation. A more persistent barrier to feeling as if I belonged to my environment was a lack of shared interests with my fellow students. Going to a small town, East Tennessee public school, called Oakdale, people were most commonly interested in activities, such as hunting and fishing with a pouch of smokeless tobacco in their mouths. I, being voluntarily isolated from such people, devoted my time to learning, having delved deep into the topics of psychology and philosophy. I felt more self-aware than others, being the only one to contemplate the process of maturity while going through adolescence and,I also felt that I may have never known what set me apart from others. At fifteen, I visited a psychiatrist, named Margaret Berret Ph.D., who was skilled in her practice. After a few visits, I was diagnosed with asperger's. This diagnosis comforted me due to the fact that I could put a name to my condition and, I was then aware that their were others who shared my feelings of being different. I am twenty now, and, although getting over a difficult breakup, balancing work and school, and suffering from depression, my family, my friends, and my two loving dogs provide me with support so that I feel content. If anyone wants to contribute something profound (or to just say Hi), I encourage you to do so. With some stimulating conversation, we can all have a nice time.

Welcome Derrick. Will make an attempt at saying something profound. :)

It sounds like you've come to the right place. Many of us will read your introduction, and feel as though they were written by themselves. I myself had never joined a forum website, or contributed to a community, before discovering this place. Like many things in life, I had come for the information, but for once, stayed for the company. It's an unfamiliar, yet welcome, feeling; to belong. It's one that many of us aren't accustomed to at all, so I do hope that you are comfortable enough, to feel you can belong here. You'll find our members are generally friendly, and supportive, and there's a wealth of knowledge here too. I recommend checking the resources section too. We encourage members to add to this, as well: Autism & Asperger's Resources | AspiesCentral.com

Thank you, Vanilla. I'm sure that, with the resources provided by this site, I will learn new things and develop a feeling of belonging. :)
