So my sister knows I am big on learning how to quilt to keep my grandmother's legacy alive by following after her. So, my sister calls me and wants me to make a weighted blanket for her son who is 10 yrs old. He loves minions and my sister also wanted me to make butterflies on it because our father died and he had attachments to our father so she believed that this will help him feel closer to him this way. I Was thinking of making more quilts for kids who needs a hug weighted blanket/quilt. Here is a picture of my creation. I also am surprising my nephew with a Lap weighted pad. P.S. I also made this Lap Pad reversible. Here are the front and back of this quilt.

So, He can take it to school and feel like he can accomplish his school work. What do you think? Or should I go with next option? Let me know what looks better.

It's a great quilt yes and I think the butterflies look fine they are dark colours and look like boy butterflies :) though not sure that butterflies have genders? Probably they do but not necessarily subject to Western human cultural norms o_O Anyhew bet he will love this quilt. I can't fill in your questions easily, are you asking should you label the quilt in some way? I don't think so myself if thats what you mean?

I can't answer the question as to whether the butterflies look masculine or feminine or not - a butterfly is just a butterfly! Also, this whole idea of things/toys being for girls or being for boys doesn't sit well with me, kids need to be exposed to a whole range of things and allowed to make their own mind up without society telling them that they can't do this, or play with that because it's 'for girls' or 'for boys', that's a bogus concept that closes doors for kids. Kids shouldn't have gender roles forced upon them, but should be free to decide for themselves what their role should be in life.

A butterfly - is it masculine enough?

Other than that observation, the quilt is great. For any gender!
