Need help

Hi

I'M 21 and I am self diagnosed waiting on an official diagnosis of autism. My psychiatrist doesn't help and there aren't many groups I can go to for help but I could really use some help amd advice for some coping mechanisms and tools used to deal with certain every day issues.

My biggest problems are my sensual issues (mostly auditory) and my obsessivenes. I am currently burning my hands every time I wash them because otherwise I am convinced they are still dirty so really any advice you guys can give would be great.

Thanks so much

Welcome :) That sounds extremely difficult. With my OCD issues, I remind myself of the consequences. Such as: "I can check the stove one more time, but then I have to get to work or I'll be late." That helps me, but I understand if it isn't so easy for you. Sorry if I can't be more helpful.

OCD is exacerbated by stress, so it may help to focus on stressors in your life.

I don't know what to say for injuring yourself by being germophobic. Consider that whatever you do, in a very short time bacteria will be at their pre-washing levels.

Plus, there are normal microflora that actually protect you from disease. You do not want to rid yourself them. Soap and very warm water is sufficient. In fact, short chain fatty acids in soap, rather than detergents, are toxic to many harmful bacteria.

Feeling you have dirty hands is the worst. I wonder if people know how awful it is. I had this problem so much it was making me feel so bad I needed it to get better or I could not take it. I tried something extreme (for me) I started touching things bare-handed on the bus. I held onto the rails on the bus, the seat backs, I touched everything and then forced myself when I was home to eat with those hands without washing.

People may say this is wrong because it could make me sick but anything was worth making this problem better and it worked. I never had problems with needing to obsessively wash my hands again. I do not know if this would help anyone else but I wanted to mention it.

I do wash my hands in case anyone is worried I just no longer feel dirty and panicked about it all the time. I hardly think about it.
