Hello,

I am 30 and have never before reached out to others. I dont know much about myself or what I have but I am sure something is going on. Im hoping to chat to people, understand more and also maybe see if anyone can relate to me.

I have officially been diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia whilst at uni but i was not being assessed for anything else.

I am prompted here today because over the years things are getting more intense and I dont understand much about this and have before always avoided looking into this.

Hi, welcome.

I've always been a mystery to myself too.

Finding this place has been very helpful indeed.

I cant afford a diagnosis, probably dont want that either.

I cant look people in the eye and never could, i cant do handwriting, i get upset easy where i have to hold back tears if watching films or sometimes reading the news. In formal social situations or approaching a colleague i find very difficult and do weird things. I thing my manager has noticed something. What has drawn me here today is two things, torment of working a repetative job preventing me to learn. I think i have hyper focus and have spent 7 years in full time education since school and now in my work its unbearable, i want to learn but feel im being forced to regress in knowledge. The other thing, my daughter of 19 months is now showing indications of being on the spectrum and has regressed in speech and no longer speaks. Im now upset about this and worried - reminds me i have serious hypercondria and anxiety.

I dont know if im high functioning autism or asberges?

I don't know if i'm high functioning autism or asbergers?

Unfortunately they don't seem to be simple distinctions to be easily separated from one another. Enogh so that I must concede that in fact I may have High Functioning Autism as opposed to what the DSM-V now refers to as "Autism Spectrum Disorder" (ASD). I didn't speak in sentences until I was four years old. Yet I've always had excellent manual dexterity and I used to even teach time management at the corporate level with optimal executive functioning. I also used to have a stilited walk as a kid and my stimming has always been to pace (like a judge) or stand still and sway back and forth. I also have comorbid clinical depression, social anxiety and OCD, formally diagnosed many years ago.

Though the very designation "Autism Spectrum Disorder" may overlap with High Functioning Autism. Leaving many of us confused considering developments of the DSM-V back in May of 2013. Personally I don't care what they call it. Though I see a few people seem insulted by referring to Asperger's Syndrome as a form of autism. But anyone subject to the DSM-V's protocols well...we don't have that luxury.

Dr. Tony Attwood goes to some effort to distinguish the two. At least it's something to analyze relative to your specific question.

"Having reviewed the literature, we may be able to answer the question, is there a difference between Asperger's syndrome and High Functioning Autism? The reply is that the research and clinical experience would suggest that there is no clear evidence that they are different disorders. Their similarities are greater than their differences. We appear to be taking, particularly in Europe and Australia, a dimensional view of autism and Asperger' syndrome rather than a categorical approach. (Leekam, Libby, Wing Gould and Gillberg 2000). At present both terms can be used interchangeably in clinical practice."

I've felt like that before, but I think , for me at least, it was 100% perspective, and kind of a self made illusion. I used to feel like a caged tiger in some jobs. Spirit crushed, going nowhere with no way out, but that's rarely true. We make the only bars and limitations that usually exist, and there is almost always a way out.

The other thing, my daughter of 19 months is now showing indications of being on the spectrum and has regressed in speech and no longer speaks.

I have three kids, and my youngest is now 2 and is only just starting to speak. He said mum and da a few months ago and chanted them, but nothing else until the last few weeks - I wouldn't worry just yet.

Is she you're first?

If so you'll probably feel like I did, in that she such a delicate thing - when she was a baby - "is she still breathing?"

"oh no she's fallen over", "that child stolen her toy - oh no!"

By the time your on your third it's more lilke "he'll be ok", "get up and stop crying, you're alright".

Famously Einstein didn't talk until 4 years old.

Welcome Jiml
There is lots of information here.
I found a place I really like, and there are some really great people here.

Welcome Jiml.
I was only diagnosed two years ago and I'm far from young.
Lived my life with other diagnosis like anxiety disorder, chronic depression, OCD. Never heard of Aspergers until now. But, it sure explains a lot and this is a great place to be open and learn from each other. My psychologist says there is no distintion from the two. High Functioning Autism and Aspergers. Just different rungs on the spectrum and the word has been removed from most diagnostic manuals. Doesn't matter. I'm finally learning what I'm about and why and I'm certainly not alone as I used to feel.
